It looks simple and it is simple! But you have to pay attention to the following things:
Step 1: Add media
There are two ways to add media: in an article or as a plain picture. When you add media to an article you clink on 'Add media' in the article itself. When you just want to add a picture (or video, or audio) you go to 'Contributions' en click on 'Add media'. In both cases the following wizard will appear:
Now you choose if you want to upload you picture from you hard drive or from the internet. Then click on 'Next'. Now the following wizard will appear:
Step 2: give the picture a good title
It is important that all the pictures on our website have short, clear titles. Give the picture a good title which contains as much information as possible about the object. Don't use DC329234.jpg as a title. Titles like Photo, Painting or The first day I dared walking to school with my best friend Anna are either not informative enough or too long.
Rules of thumb concerning pictures of:
Art
Title: Title of the artwork/ exposition/ painting/ original picture.
Events
Title: Title of what you see at the event.
Example art:
Tuimelaar
Example event:
Martijn Horvath over mislukte reclamecampagnes tijdens Kom je ook? #FAIL
Note
Never put the name of the author of the picture in the title. The title should only give a description of the image.
Note
In case there is a person in the picture: don't just put the name of the person in the title. If you do this it isn't clear in the search results if it is an picture or for example a biography. So don't say: 'Jack Johnson' but 'Jack Johnson enjoying a beer at Kom je ook?'
Step 3: caption
When you or one of your colleagues made the picture you have to put the following things in the caption:
Art
Caption: Name of the artist, description, year, source.
Events
Caption: What event is this and when and where is it taking place.
When you took a picture from the internet, you have to add the source in the caption. It is important that you don't use pictures that are protected with Copyright. You can go to Flickr.com and search for pictures with a Creative Commons License (advanced search), this pictures you can freely use. If you took an photo from a website, you have to name the source and, if possible, the author. Like this:
Found on Flickr, made by Dystopos.
//Tip:// When putting a text between brackets followed by the url, space and the name, it will become a link: so [http://flickr.com Flickr] will become Flickr.
//Note:// You have to link the picture with the profile of the author not with the photo stream from the author.
//Rights://
Copy the rights of the picture on our website. When you click 'edit' a Copyright button will appear in the same bar, change this if necessary.
Thank you mail
The author should get a thank you email with a link to the page.
Step 4: who made this?
You're automatically connected to the image as author/photographer. Delete yourself if you are not the photographer, and add the right person as the author.
Step 5: who is in the picture?
When there are persons in the picture you can fill in there name here.
Step 6: when was this made?
Fill in the right date from when the picture is made.
Step 7: Keywords
Here you have to add matching keywords.
Step 8: Place an image in the running body text.
This is optional. Use the code [[image 1]]. The number of the image you fill in here (1, 2 or other) corresponds with the position of the image on the page.
Additional information
An image is a THING
So it has its own page on the website. Go to the page of the image, click 'edit this page' to make the relevant links.
Adjust the caption after changing it elsewhere
When uploading an image to a page the caption you enter, will be copied to the caption of the page of the picture. But if you write a caption after uploadig, or change the caption of the picture after a while, then it's not automatically copied to the page of the image itself, or vice versa. Be aware of this and make sure to adjust it accordingly!
Tag people visible on the picture
Click on their face in the picture and look for them in the search. By tagging people, the picture will appear on their profile.
