Born in Assiut, Egypt in 1977, lives and works in Basel and Cairo. Magdy works with different media including drawing, painting, animation, installation, sculpture, video and sound. He is particularly interested in exploring the space between fiction and reality in representation of power in the media and global culture.

Selected solo exhibitions include The Common Deceit of Reality, curated by Regine Basha, Okay Mountain, Austin (2007); In the Grave of Intergalactic Utopia, Newman Popiashvili Gallery, New York (2006); Dream On, a collaboration with Marianne Rinderknecht, Neue Kunsthalle St. Gallen, Switzerland (2004) and Two Days to Apocalypse, Falaki Gallery, American University in Cairo, Cairo (2003). In 2008 his work will be included in The Geopolitics of Animation at MARCO - Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Vigo,
Spain. His work was included in group exhibitions at Centro Andaluz de Arte
Contemporáneo (CAAC), Sevilla, Spain, Apexart, New York; Enrique Guerrero Gallery, Mexico City; Sfeir – Semler Gallery, Beirut, Lebanon; Le Fresnoy, Tourcoing, France (2007); “la Caixa” Foundation - CaixaForum, Barcelona; Sala Rekalde, Bilbao; Zendai Museum of Modern Art, Shanghai; Galerie SAW Gallery, Ottawa (2006); The Townhouse Gallery, Cairo; Hiscox Art Projects, London (2005) and Art in General, New York (2004).
He is represented by Newman Popiashvili Gallery, New York and Townhouse Gallery for Contemporary Art, Cairo.
