From March 28th, Kunstfort bij Vijfhuizen, which is part of the defence line of fortresses surrounding Amsterdam, presents the exhibition “Dreams are my reality: the seriousness of play”. This exhibition playfully highlights the way artists and the public interact with history and national heritage sites. Seven international artists will show how imagination and reality are linked. History is hence made to be seen as a palpable construction: a game in which we all have a role to play.

Homemade history!

History is both a matter of seriousness and a hobby; therefore, the way re-enactment and Living History groups operate was taken as the basic assumption for the exhibition. But ‘making’ history can be seen as a social game, even if no theatricals are used. Old myths and collective memories are mixed together with personal experience. Film and media images become factoids. An historical monument becomes a stage set; and a stage set becomes a prop to confirm and elaborate an historical experience.
