Best of Mediamatic

Mediamatic has been around since 1983. Due to a background in both art and theory, we have been able to provide a new, sometimes very unconventional, but always surprising view on the world of modern media. We have produced magazines and CD-ROMs, and organize workshops, exhibitions, salons, dev camps and other get-together's. Mediamatic.net has been online since 1994 and became an online social network in 2002. This is a selection of our favorite projects.

  • Playing Flickr-

  • Flickr Peep Show-

    Mei ’05 - jun ’05: “Mobiele telefonie of internet sociale netwerken door middel van visuele communicatie verbonden door mob tags en/of kernwoorden... wat?!” Flickr Peepshow was de tweede tentoonstelling op de begane grond van het, nu gesloopte, Post CS gebouw. De ruiten waren, op miniscule gaatjes na, bedekt waardoor je de installatie kon zien. Het publiek stuurde per sms kernwoorden naar de server, die Flickr afbeeldingen terugzond met dezelfde tags. Een alledaags instrument werd gebruikt om de schermen te beïnvloeden en zelfs te beheren. Het publiek werd zo onderdeel van het werk, ‘performing’ de installatie.

  • Night Garden-

    Nov 06 - Jan 07: Night Garden was a subtechnical indoor garden in which new technology, next nature, contemporary art and its consumption came together to form an interactive bio-technical habitat. Christa Sommerer and Laurent Mignonneau presented Interactive Plant Growing, one of the most innovative interactive works of the previous century. Ralf Schreiber and Christian Faubel developed tiny robots who lived autonomously in the garden. There were workshops, food, self-regenerating flowers and psycho-chemical garden furniture.

  • The Girlfriend Experience-

    Jan 07 - Mar 07: Online social behavior is paradoxical. It's at the same time completely anonymous and unbelievable intimate. This fact led Martin Butler to conceive The Girlfriend Experience, an interactive installation consisting of four real-life avatars. Viewers could connect with them through Skype, get to know them, give them tasks and see how far they could and would go. This event took place at Mediamatic, Amsterdam.

  • El HEMA T-shirts-

    Aug 07 - Jan 08: Hema is the manifestation of Dutch culture. With an eye on Arabic-Dutch art, Mediamatic wondered what an Arabic Hema would look like. El HEMA was born. Five new Arabic fonts were launched, and a design competition was set up to track down the ultimate EL HEMA products. During a fashion show burka-clad girls strutted the catwalk, only to have their burkas playfully lifted by a gust of air, revealing models wearing t-shirts with Arabic pick-up lines. Throughout the opening weekend hordes of people waited in line to enter the shop. The exhibition provided a glimpse into modern Arab culture.

  • Sleep Inn-

    May 08: Mediamatic offered fifty visitors of Art Amsterdam and her urban parallel project Temporary Museum Amsterdam a free place to stay. Melanie Bonajo and Kinga Kielczynska hosted the evenings, which were packed full of workshops and performances. The 5 days of alternative communication included laugh therapy and a screening of ghost footage. There was a group massage by five holistic massage therapists, a pantomime concert and the chance to communicate with the dead. Word got around, and the last few nights were fully booked.

  • Taking books from the Distributed Library-

    When the Distributed Library opened, hundreds of members of the Mediamatic community dropped by to pick up their favorite titles. The books were linked to their profiles.

  • Pile of clothes at Ikikik!-

    Jul 08 - Oct 08: Ikikik! concerned DIY fashion and online publishing. It was a continuing exhibition, sewing studio, and story sharing party. All with the aim of looking ravishing on- and offline, while keeping the ecological footprint as small as possible. Activist- and fashion collective Andrea Crews came over from Paris to help us out. With their help, visitors turned 430.000 kilo's of recycled clothing into designer pieces. This was a reference to the 430.000 euros of funding Mediamatic might lose.

  • Ik R.I.P. in de vitrine-

    Jan 09 - Apr 09: Mediamatic encourages you to think about death. Besides arranging your funeral, obtaining life insurance and drafting your will, you will have to think about what you leave behind in the online world. What happens to your online profile after you die? Ik R.I.P. was the third in a series about self-representation on the internet. The exhibition included coffins from Ghana, a website, and computer game The Graveyard. Visitors could participate in workshops (Coffin for your Beloved) and have a go at 'test-dying' in a coffin.

    "Wat is er mis met gevangenisstraf voor het gooien van kauwgom op straat?".

    May 09 - Jun 09: Asking questions is one of Mediamatic's favorite pastimes. During the WatSpinoza? project, Mediamatic advocated public discussion by raising difficult and controversial questions in the public space, at Mediamatic Bank and online. Mediamatic entered into a dialogue with the public, inviting them to respond to the questions via SMS, the website and the blackboards in the exhibition space. WatSpinoza? was part of My Name Is Spinoza, and included workshops, debates and performances.

  • Electro Clothing Workshop Series-

    Jun 09: Fashion has never been more fun. With Nadya Peek, Mediamatic explored the world of wearable technology: clothing that lights up in the dark, clothing that sings when it is touched, and clothing that moves when it is cold. In her work Nadya investigates the link between the online and the offline world. Her workshops highlight playfulness and ingenuity: in her eyes consumers are the best producers, and often have better ideas than big corporations or fancy universities. All three workshops were sold out.

  • Handling electronics at a robot workshop-

    Sep 09: After their successful robot workshop in Mediamatic's Night Garden, Ralf Schreiber and Christian Faubel returned in 2009 to spread some more robot romance. In just a couple of hours they taught participants how to make their own, self-supporting robotic creatures. A circuit board, solar panel and motor formed the core of the kit. The robots are kinetic, which means to move when they are put in a light source. (An overhead-projector or sunlight). After you'd soldered the kit together, you could brighten up your new pal using Schmelzolan, synthetic granules that melt at 180 °C, and can be shaped into any desired form.

    Sep 09: The aim of Mediamatic's 2009 Social RFID Hacker Camp was to realize engaging spaces and places, wearables and interactive installations. An excellent group of coders, (interaction) designers, roboticians and physical computeers were collected, along with a group of researchers and students from MIT. In five whirlwind days the hackers produced collaborative drawings, multiple video based installations, an RFID frisbee, and more. Art, design and technology formed as one. All projects were presented at the high-profile conference PICNIC.

  • Bezoeker bekijkt het Kabul Paviljoen-

    Het Kabul Paviljoen is gecureerd door Robert Kluijver. Onderdeel van de Amsterdam Biennale die van oktober 2009 tot januari 2010 plaatsvond bij Mediamatic Bank, Amsterdam.

  • fietsen tijdens de opening van Sur Place-

    Tijdens de opening van Sur Place werd er volop gefietsts op de binnenbaan ontworpen door DUS Architecten.

  • in de rij voor het Bicycle Film Festival-

    Onderdeel van de opening van Sur Place, een tentoonstelling in Mediamatic Bank over stedelijke fietscultuur.

  • Robot taking its first steps-

    Made during the Disco Robot Workshop, April 2010 at Mediamatic Bank. The workshop was given by Ralf Schreiber and Christian Faubel.

  • Philip plays Mortal Kombat-

    With the cheat codes tucked safely between his teeth, Philip plays Mortal Kombat during the opening of Arcade: Level 2.

  • Bezoekers spelen op de Japanse sit-down machines tijdens de opening van Level 2: Arcade-

    Arcade is an expanding collection of old and new games and technologies. We kicked off with a collection of rare vintage arcade video games and Mediamatic's ikInstallations. December 18th 2010, Mediamatic Bank.

  • Over Datum Eetclub 1-

    Bezoekers genieten van het voorgerecht. Samen met Tinda hebben ze twee soorten soep gemaakt: een Italiaanse tomatenbroodsoep en een Portugese garnalenbroodsoep.

  • Dessert opdienen bij ODE 20-

    wel 70 borden met dessert gemaakt van over datum producten bij de laatste keer Over Datum Eetclub.

  • Kids swinging in the Van Gendthallen-

    Oostenburgereiland Amsterdam. Research for Mediamatic Schommelclub, the first in a series of activities exploring the Van Genthallen and Mediamatic's possible move there. Onderdeel van Mediamatic Schommelclub.
