Designing Social Cities of Tomorrow

Public presentation of workshop results

16 Feb 2012

How can we make use of new media technologies in order to make our cities more social, rather than just more hi-tech? During a three-day workshop 25 innovators from diverse national backgrounds and disciplines (architects, philosophers, engineers, and designers) will work together to tackle that question. Join us for the presentation of their work.

The cases studied vary from the development of an empty space on Amsterdam's Zeeburgereiland, public space development in Eindhoven's Strijp-S, city making in The Hague's Haagse Havens, to the opportunities of digital media for civic innovation in Amsterdam. Can we port the collaborative principles from e-culture to urban design? How can we make use of digital technologies to enable citizens to act on collectively shared issues? Can media technologies bring about a sense of place and connection among urbanites, and a feeling of ‘ownership’ of their environment? These questions will be addressed in the various presentations. The workshop outcomes contribute to the general debate on new media and urban design.
