I’m a postgraduate student doing my Masters in Fine Arts at the Dutch Art Institute in Enschede. I used the laser cutter at FabLab to make fretwork cut-outs from thin plywood for a Public Space project in Den Bosch whilst studying at Post St.Joost.

The slogan of the new high-status district where this ‘public space’ exhibition takes place, the Paleiskwartier – named for the ‘Palace of Justice’ law courts – has as it’s slogan “Huisvesting Weerspiegelt Succes”, (translates more or less as “Accommodation Reflects Success”).

......................................................... Being able to use the laser cutter at FabLab, rather than having to cut just one ornament by hand with a fret saw, has enabled this project to take on a kind of ‘promotional stunt’ format. 100 fret-worked (laser-cut) mottos were posted to the inhabitants of the chicest homes in the district - a gift from the “motto-promotion team”. The accompanying letter encouraged recipients to send a digital photo of the emblem in their own home. Shopkeepers throughout the neighbourhood displayed a larger fretwork in their shops for ‘Motto Promotion Day’. And in two prominent ‘ports of entry’ large plywood cut-outs – almost 2 and a half metres long - were hung up.
