Slum Sessions #10

Put it down in tape

5 Feb 2013

It's time for the true purpose of our favela - making stuff. At this session we explained everything you need to know to begin building and start making stuff.

First we had a fascinating presentation about pigeon poop by a newcomer in the favela. Arne Hendricks proposes to make a holy pigeon tower out of bricks made from pressed wet newspaper. Pigeon poop, or guano, worshipping goes back to the time of the Inca and you can still find pigeon towers standing worldwide.

After the guano presentation we discussed a floor plan for the projects based on previous Slum Sessions. Then it was time to get up and to define project spaces visibly on the Mediamatic Fabriek floor. The upstairs projects were able to work together to tape their spots and the downstairs projects had to make due with outlining in string and bricks on their wet floor. It is a Freezing Favela, after all.

Freezing Favela

Freezing Favela is a small city within Mediamatic Fabriek. Builders, cooks and other makers have been given the possibility to claim a part of the big industrial hall as their own. They work on their projects autonomously, but like in any other community, materials, space and functions have to be shared. Favela citizens are making tosti's from scratch, paper from cow shit, furniture from cardboard, and food from our very own aquaponics farm. And everyone is welcome to contribute. Build this city with us.
