The Moth Project

Cathching insects by night at Hortus Botanicus

26 Jun 2014

Our primary pollinator the honeybee is in rapid decline and we do not know exactly why. Horticultural installation artists Jeff Schmuki & Wendy DesChene draw attention to importance of pollinator populations and the need to seek alternatives for pollination through The Moth Project. All environmentalists and curious backyard naturalists most welcome.

The Moth Project

Using reflective light tents and videos, local moths are projected to attract actual moths and other nighttime pollinators. This visually stunning project acts as an interdisciplinary public art experience, expanding and promoting an understanding and appreciation for moths and other "second shift pollinators". All lighting and projections are driven by solar power gathered during the day, releasing us from the tether of the electrical outlet.

You're invited to take part in this experiential and educational survey of local pollinators.  The aim is to produce a “pollinator field guide” containing identified moths and other insects in order to provide information on the importance of pollinators while encouraging those curious in backyard naturalism.

Jeff Schmuki and Wendy DesChene are invited by Buitenwerkplaats, an artist in residence near Amsterdam.

Program

The projection and presentation of the artists will be held from 23:00 - 01:00

Lightness

This project is part of Lightness. In an age where everyone is affected by the weight of society, the overbearing fears of the economy and the heavy hand of government, 'lightness' is the way forward. Let go of the material and celebrate the ethereal with 11 weeks of 'lightness'. Each week Mediamatic invites a new artist to question the meaning of 'lightness'.
