Workshop: 3D printing with living organisms.

by Eric Klarenbeek

1 Nov 2014

Is it possible to 3D print with life? Together with designer Eric Klarenbeek we will explore the possibilities for printing with living materials, organic substrates and mycelium. Start your experiment here and create products with a lower carbon footprint.

"Veiled Lady" - a 3D printed and growing piece by Eric Klarenbeek -

Workshop

We are exploring construction methods with living mycelium, the threadlike network of fungi, using this infinite natural source of organisms as living glue for binding organic waste. Once it’s full-grown and dried, it can be used as a structural, stable and renewable material. Combined with 3D printing this gives us tremendous design freedom and a scope into our future production.

As preparation Studio Eric Klarenbeek & Bas Molkenboer of 3D Printing for you, set up a workshop to learn how to build a DIY delta 3D printer, with the focus to create a machine that can print with organic matter.

What can you expect?

Eric Klarenbeek will focus on the following elements during his workshop:
• Learn how to sterilise, mix and prepare different kinds of substrates, inoculated with mycelium spores. The substrate will serve as a nutrient base for the fungal organism, enabling it to grow and develop over time.
• 3D print porous shapes using a selection of different PLA filaments: wood, bamboo and natural. The porous nature of the design stimulates the growth of the mycelium based substrates, which we will add inside the printed structure afterwards.
After the workshop each participant can bring home a 3D printed PLA structure, with the inoculated substrate inside, growing further after the workshop.
