An important book on the design of the word and the page. Adler shows playfully how a text is shaped to a final design or image. The authors find some examples in Antiquity like shaped texts in ancient Greek; many more in the Middle Ages where monks were at work for their own invention or for spiritual inspiration; many more when movable type made the design of the page more obviously a concern of the printer and publisher.
