The Mediamatic Logos and Marks

Mediamatic went through 3 versions of its logo

Text in progress — When we founded Mediamatic in 1983, I first made a logo based on the style of the DAF Variomatic automatic transmission logo. In 1984 we added the eggtimer–and–lightning mark that served us till the end of the nineties. After that we abandoned a mark and started just using our name written in Matthew Carters Georgia italic.

The first Mediamatic logo was moulded after the DAF Variomatic logo. It was an obvious and quick job playing on the *matic naming of both brands.

In 1984 I designed a logo, or rather, a mark that expressed our interest in timebased arts and new media. Combining a lightning bolt with an egg timer, it associated with time, electricity, sound and light.

At first, this mark was combined with the car boot style early logo. from 1985 on we started using a normal italic font to write our name.

By the end of the century, we dropped the mark again and defaulted to writing our name in Georgia Italic.

  • Inscape logo-

According to Rebekah Behrendt, art director at Inscape, the logo was explicitly inspired on the Mediamatic mark

  • DAF variomatic Logos 1958-

Variomatic was the name of a revolutionary automatic transmission system from the 1950's. The typography is nicely futuristic and formed the mould for the first Mediamatic logo in 1983. The designer remains unknown but the cars exterior was designed my Michelotti. The car and tho logo were introduced in my year of birth, 1958.
