This double feature screening casts light on a unique historical period where images lived a special life amidst the deadlock of socialist and capitalist ideologies, materialising spectacularly in the divided city of BERLIN where an idiosyncratically hybrid crossover movement of music, performance, art and super-8 film, screamed into life.
A short film programme with films by YANA YO, LYSANNE THIBODEAU, HORST MARKGRAF, DIETER HORMEL and MICHEAL BRYNNTRUP addresses the pathological condition of a technological, militarized world, meeting it with dark fantasy, sensual ecstasy and the grotesque.
The evening's main feature: Christoph Dreher and Heiner Mühlenbrock's OKAY OKAY. DER MODERNE TANZ travels through industrial landscapes and urban decay, interspersed with camera footage of live concerts and staged performances. The delicious choice of songs by PERE UBU, THE RESIDENTS, THE RED CRAYOLA and WIRE, amongst many others, not only underscoring the images but forming the core of this outstanding film.
