Workshop

Augmented Reality Games

Rapid game design workshop

Within the short time frame of three days participants conceptualize and construct a prototype of their own Augmented Reality Game. The focus of the workshop, the AR, is about playing with virtual imagery projected onto the real world.

Workshop approach

In 3 workshop days every participant will develop a prototype assisted by outstanding international trainers, lecturers and technical assistants. The days start at 10.00 and ends at 17.00.
While designing the game play, the focus will be on the use of the relation between virtual and physical. Game rules can be implemented through the software by programming; they can be implemented physically, in the real world game space; and they can be implemented socially, by designing what is and isn't allowed when trying to reach the games' goals.

The morning sessions center on input from workshop trainers. Every afternoon the participants work on their own workshop projects.
The workshop closes with a public presentation in which the issues are discussed and the results are shown.

Materials

We'll be working with the ARToolkit. The ARToolKit was originally developed by Dr. Hirokazu Kato, and its ongoing development is being supported by the Human Interface Technology Laboratory (HIT Lab) at the University of Washington, HIT Lab NZ at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, and ARToolworks, Inc, Seattle.

Explore the http://artoolkit.sourceforge.net/ website.

Basic 3d modelling will be done with Blender , the opensource 3D modelling suite.

For who?

Anyone interested in the play possibilities of Augmented Reality. Participants don't need coding skills to participate in this workshop. The trainers assist in realising participants ideas. Having coding skills, however, will allow participants to also design play elements in the software themselves.
