Germans think that showing the national flag is sinister. World Cup football in 2006 brought about a notable change. Germans overcame — temporarily — their fear of the association with right-wing nationalism. They were proud of their fatherland and held up flags en masse for the first time. Flags were still fluttering six months after the World Cup and Florian Thalhofer wanted to find out why. Were he to be afraid of the owners of these forgotten flags?

<h6>The Exhibition</h6> From 30 March to 11 May 2007 Mediamatic held an exhibition, Vergessene Fahnen, by the German artist Florian Thalhofer. Using an interactive road movie and photos, he gave an account of fellow countrymen who, months after the World Cup football in 2006, were still hanging the national flag out. Thalhofer started searching for people who had kept their flags flying, together with photographer Juliane Henrich. The flag appeals to feelings of unity and identity. But uneasy feelings about right wing radicals are never far away. Vergessene Fahnen poses questions about the stereotypes and prejudices of the viewer, and of the maker. An edition of the cd-rom magazine Mediamatic Off-line was published alongside the exhibition with the complete Korsakow version of Vergessene Fahnen. The photos in the exhibition are by Juliane Henrich. A programme with accompanying workshops such as making sausage for vegetarians and a Nina Hagen Fan Club night, wentwith the exhibition. Het tonen van de nationale vlag vinden Duitsers eng. Het wereldkampioenschap voetbal in 2006 zorgde voor een opvallende kentering. Duitsers overwonnen — tijdelijk — hun angst voor de associatie met het rechts-nationalisme. Ze waren trots op hun land en hingen voor het eerst massaal vlaggen op. Maar als zes maanden na het WK nog steeds vlaggen wapperen wil Florian Thalhofer weten waarom. Moet hij bang zijn voor de eigenaren van deze vergeten vlaggen?

<h6>De Exhibitie</h6> Van 30 maart t/m 11 mei 2007 toonde Mediamatic Vergessene Fahnen van de Duitse kunstenaar Florian Thalhofer. Met een interactieve roadmovie en foto’s vertelde hij over landgenoten die, maanden na het WK voetbal in 2006, nog altijd de nationale vlag hebben uithangen. In december 2006 reisde Thalhofer samen met fotografe Juliane Henrich door Duitsland, op zoek naar mensen die hun vlag lieten hangen. De vlag appeleerde aan gevoelens van eenheid en identiteit. Maar ook ongemakkelijke gedachten over rechts-radicaal zijn nooit ver weg. Vergessene Fahnen stelde vragen over de stereotypen en vooroordelen van de kijker, en van de maker. Bij de tentoonstelling verscheen een uitgave van het cd-rom tijdschrift Mediamatic Off-Line met de volledige Korsakow versie van Vergessene Fahnen. De foto’s in de tentoonstelling zijn van Juliane Henrich. Een programma met begeleidende workshops met o.a. worst maken voor vegetariërs en een Nina Hagen Fanclub avond was onderdeel van de tentoonstelling.
