Artists, designers, entrepreneurs, anyone can come and explore the Fablab machines to create your own prototype. We have a sublimation transfer system, laser cutter, vinyl cutter and 3D milling machine to create, for example, stencils for graffiti, stamps, a chocolate letter mould, electronic gadgets, a long-distance internet antenna or a puppet of your Second Life avator.

What is a FabLab? Pioneered by MIT's Neil Gershenfeld, a FabLab (fabrication laboratory) is a small scale workshop with the tools to make almost anything. This includes technology-enabled products generally perceived as limited to mass production. The FabLab empowers people to create their own devices and products and therefore does for physical fabrication what a desktop PC does for publishing and digital media. "Almost anything!" would be Gershenfeld's response. The FabLab equipment is designed to complement each other so that almost all aspects of a project can be developed within a lab with no need for external manufacturing. Feel free to use the machines to prototype a new El Hema product: join the <a href="http://www.mediamatic.net/artefact-18751-en.html">El Hema design competition</a>. Who we are <a href="http://www.mediamatic.net/set-13836-en.html">Mediamatic</a> is an organisation located in Amsterdam that organizes exhibitions, salons, lectures, workshops, screenings in public space and develops software and art projects. FabLab @ Mediamatic is in co-operation with the FabLab @ the <a href="http://waag.org/">Waag Society</a> and both are part of the overall organisation of FabLab's in the Netherlands <a href="http://fablab.nl">FabLab.nl</a>. When and how? Fablab can be visited by appointment (phone/email <a href="http://www.mediamatic.net/person-18431-en.html">Bernardo Gaeiras</a>), Fablab users will be available to introduce you to the machines and guide you through a strategy to get your idea into a prototype, for example for the El Hema design competition! You can join the Mediamatic Fablab as a volunteer: you get free access to the machines as long as you document your work, ideas onto the Mediamatic website and the <a href="http://wiki.fablab.nl">Fablab wiki</a>, help in knowledge transfer, and support and guide others that want to learn. Also, workshops around specific design or graphics themes are being organized. We are busy planning, please check our website soon for more information. The machines *3D milling and scanning machine: This 3D milling machine drills out woods, plastics and even metals and can make all types of parts and casings. It can also be used to make circuit boards by drilling away unwanted copper. The milling machine doubles up as a very accurate 3D scanner which makes it ideal for duplicating extra parts that you might need. It can even be used to draw greyscale images on anodised aluminium. Vanaf 25 augustus 2007 tot january 2008 is het Fablab operationeel en toegankelijk voor ondernemers, kunstenaars, ontwerpers of andere mensen die van een goed idee een tastbaar product willen maken. Een prototype van een nieuw ontwerp, een gietvorm voor een Arabische chocoladeletter, een lange afstand internet antenne, ingenieuze maquette of een poppetje van je Second Life avatar: bijna alles kun je maken in het FabLab@Mediamatic.

<h3>Wat is een Fablab?</h3> Een FabLab is een openbaar toegankelijke ruimte met een aantal gestandaardiseerde, digitaal aangestuurde machines. Bedenker van het Fablab (fabrication laboratory) is Neil Gershenfield van MIT. Een Fablab maakt het mogelijk dat kunstenaars, productontwerpers, kleine bedrijven maar vooral ook individuen zelf een product idee kunnen uitvoeren. Toegang tot het Fablab is gratis. Heb je bijvoorbeeld een leuk idee voor een nieuwe El Hema product, dan kun je de Fablab machines gebruiken voor productontwikkeling en meedingen naar een leuke prijs: <a href="http://www.mediamatic.net/artefact-18751-en.html">El Hema design competition</a>. Voor producten en andere creatieve uitspattingen tot dusver op het Fablab zie <a href="http://www.mediamatic.net/fablabprojects">ons Fablab portfolio</a>. <h3>Wat kost het?</h3> Aan het gebruik van het FabLab zijn geen kosten verbonden. Dit is een essentieel element van een FabLab: de techniek moet laagdrempelig en zonder kosten beschikbaar zijn. Iedereen die wil werken in het FabLab moet als tegenprestatie het productieproces uitvoerig documenteren, publiceren via mediamatic.net <a href="http://wiki.fablab.nl">wiki.fablab.nl</a> en anderen actief helpen om te leren werken met het FabLab. Daarnaast bieden we ook intensief begeleidde <a href="http://www.mediamatic.net/artefact-20239-nl.html">worskhops</a> aan. <h3>Openingstijden, FabLab spreekuur en Workshops</h3> Het FabLab is geopend op woensdag- en donderdagavond (18.00 tot 21.00), of op afspraak (bel/email <a href="http://www.mediamatic.net/person-19946-en.html">Irene Nooren</a> of <a href="http://www.mediamatic.net/person-18431-en.html">Bernardo Gaeiras</a>). Nieuwe gebruikers krijgen daarbij advies over hun product idee. Mediamatic biedt de komende maanden wekelijks FabLab introductieworkshops aan. In 1 of 2 dagen maken deelnemers een volledig product, en leren daarmee alle vaardigheden om met de machines en de software te werken. De eerste volgende workshop staat gepland voor <a href="http://www.mediamatic.net/artefact-23665-nl.html">26 oktober 2007</a>. <h3>Wie zijn we?</h3> <a href="http://www.mediamatic.net/set-13836-en.html">Mediamatic</a> is een culturele organisatie die werkt aan het culturele gebruik van nieuwe media. We organiseren tentoonstellingen, workshops, salons, lezingen en workshops. De zusterorganisatie <a href="http://www.mediamatic.nl">Mediamatic Lab</a> maakt websites en andere nieuwe media toepassingen en gebruikt het zelfs ontwikkelde anyMeta. Het FabLab @ Mediamatic wordt in de opstartfase gerund door <a href="http://www.mediamatic.net/person-19946-en.html">Irene Nooren</a>. Zij begeleidt bezoekers van het Fablab. FabLab @ Mediamatic vindt plaats in samenwerking met FabLab @ the <a href="http://waag.org/">Waag Society</a>. Beiden zijn onderdeel van de Nederlandse Fablab organisatie. Zie <a href="http://fablab.nl">FabLab.nl</a>. <h3>Wat kan je maken in een Fablab?</h3> "Bijna alles!" is daarop het antwoord. Een Fablab bestaat uit minimaal drie machines die zo goed bij elkaar passen dat je er - alle onderdelen van - een product mee kunt maken. <h3>Welke apparaten staan in een FabLab?</h3> Fablab's bestaan wereldwijd uit dezelfde apparatuur en software om de machines aan te sturen. Dit maakt de uitwisseling van kennis over digitaal ontwerpen en het gebruik van Fablab eenvoudig. In Fablab@Mediamatic staan drie van de vier machines die ook in andere FabLab's in de wereld aanwezig zijn: 3D scanner en freesmachine Hiermee kun je 3D objecten maken. Het apparaat freest iedere gewenste vorm uit hout, plastic en zelfs metaal. Het apparaat werkt ook als een 3D scanner. Je zet een object in het apparaat, en de scanner maakt een digitale kopie. Die gebruik je om een exacte kopie te maken, bijvoorbeeld in een andere materiaalsoort. Of je bewerkt het digitale bestand en laat de frees vervolgens een nieuwe en aangepaste versie maken. FabLab@Mediamatic werkt met een Roland Modela MXX20. Laser snijmachine Een laser cutter wordt gebruikt om in vlakke materialen te graveren, of om exacte onderdelen te snijden die je later samenvoegt tot een product. Het Mediamatic fablab werkt met een Epilog Mini 24 Laser Cutter. Vinyl snijmachine Met dit apparaat kun je stickers, plakletters en andere zelfklevende materialen maken. Het snijdt het kopermateriaal voor antenne's en printplaatjes. Het FabLab@Mediamatic werkt met een Roland Camm-1 GX24 3D Plasma snijder Deze machine hebben we (nog) niet in Nederland omdat deze groot is en nogal wat aandacht vraagt van facility management, afzuiging, koeling en dergelijke. Aanvullende apparatuur: Sublimatie printer en digitale borduurmachine Het Mediamatic Fablab is aangevuld met een sublimatie printer, een apparaat waarmee je hoge kwaiteit drukwerk kunt maken op T-shirts, petjes en andere kleding, en op mokken of andere 3D objecten. Het FabLab@Mediamatic werkt met een Epson R1800 Dye Sub Printer & Hix Heat Press In het FabLab staat ook een programmeerbare borduurmachine waarmee textiel geborduurd kan worden. Het FabLab@Mediamatic werkt met een Brother 2100D. <h3>Video instructie</h3> We zijn bezig met het samenstellen van een serie video lessen over het installeren en het gebruiken van de FabLab apparatuur. Dit is niet alleen handig voor mensen die het Mediamatic Fablab willen gebruiken, maar ook voor gebruikers van de andere FabLab's in de wereld.
