And what is inner beauty anyway? Visit The Art of Deception: A collection of transformed pigs hearts that explore how biological interventions and aesthetic manipulation can be used as tools for the ultimate deception: The transformation of inner beauty.

By designer Isaac Monté and evolutionary biologist Toby Kiers (VU).

Opening hours: Wed - Fri 17:00 - 19:00 / Sat + Sun 15:00 - 19:00
We offer tours for groups upon request.
Facebook

The Art of Deception

Challenging the contemporary notions of beauty and offer a vision on society's pursuit for perfection.

Humans use deception to achieve perfection in society, art and science. Reacting to this through art, Monté and Kiers have taken discarded pig hearts and transformed them into elegant vessels for new life.

By decellularizing the hearts and re-populating them with various techniques they aesthetically improved the hearts for humans. This procedure marks a new era of synthetic biology - where organs are stripped of their cellular contents, leaving behind a sterile scaffold that can be repopulated with stemcells. While the medical utilisation of this resource is being realised, the artistic and creative value of these ghost organs represents unexplored territory. Can the ghost organs function as blank canvas for designers? And will humans be able to manipulate organs for aesthetic purposes?

The Art of Deception through windows

Day and Nighttime views

18 transformed pig hearts will displayed at Mediamatic's 19th century Sluisdeurenloods. His previous works include Filter Factory, birdhouses made out of cigarette filters and Les Sauvages, a collection of masks made out of fur from roadkill. In 2015 Isaac received the Bio Art and Design Award, which gave him the opportunity to create The Art of Deception in collaboration with Toby Kiers, Professor in Evolutionary Biology at the VU in Amsterdam.

Toby Kiers

Toby Kiers is evolutionary biologist and Professor of Mutualistic Interactions at the VU Amsterdam. All around us organisms are engaged in intimate cooperations and trades. From the intestinal bacteria in our guts to the bees that pollinate crops, we actually know very little of how cooperative relationships evolve in nature. It will be on show as a permanent installation inside of our soon-to-be-opened Bio Art Supply Shop.

The official opening of the installation will take place on Friday the 13th of January, during our New Year's Reception. 17:30 - 20:30.

Free entrance

Problematic By-catch

The Dutch fishery industry catches approximately 50.000 tons of bycatch a year. Discards (too young and too small fishes) used to be trown back overboard, but the chances of survival are insecure. If they survive this procedure, they will probably be eaten by hungry seagulls.

Encouraging Sustainability by Law

To encourage a more sustainable and selective fishery industry, fishermen are now forced by European law to bring all catch to land. This is easier said than done for Dutch fishery. Important species such as sole and plaice all swim together at the bottom at the sea and fishing with big trawlers takes everything including baby fishes, crabs, starfishes or rayfish. By increasing mesh sizes in the nets, some little ones can leave the net, but that doesn’t apply on every kind of fish.

Als een vis op het droge close up

The Future of the Fishing Industry

What happens with this 50.000 tons bycatch when they come ashore? It is not allowed to sell it for direct human consumption, that would encourage the capture of juvenile fish. The bycatch is currently being processed to fishmeal, which provides food for farmed fish and livestock. Although the new law aims for a more sustainable fishing process with less discards, if the technique doesn't improve, the bycatch will remain.
The consequences will not only be many unnecessarily wasted fish, but also the North Sea will be over-exploited, causing the fishing industry casting their own future.

Als een vis op het droge

Arjanne Bode graduated at Art, Communication and Design (Fontys, Tilburg) with ‘Als een vis op het droge’ in 2016. Here at Mediamatic we are interested in the cultural and artistic applications of this 'new' bio-material and invite you to start exploring it for yourself. During this introduction course you will learn how to cultivate the Oyster Mushroom at home and by doing so gain a better understanding of the potential of this organism.

Tickets

Mycelium as a source for bio-based materials

Mycelium is the white fungal network of filaments that you will find underneath our soil. In the woods these strains or ‘mushroom roots’ are responsible for the transfer of nutrients, detoxification and the degradation of dead plants and treas. It is precisely this feature that makes mycelium a powerful agent in the production of new bio-based materials.

Current developments have pushed mycelium in the fields of fashion, furniture, architecture and fine-arts, stating that it can be seen as ‘the plastic of the future’. Go here to read more about mycelium as an alternative for leather, and a dress made from fungi.

Discuss, learn and grow

In this workshop you will meet up with mushroom expert Wouter Hassing to (critically) discuss the mycelium’s potential and gain a better understanding of how to start cultivating yourself. Over the course of 2 hours you will be introduced to different growth media, substrates, cultivation methods and fungal strains. After which you will produce your own bag of straw substrate and learn how to extract spawn from full grown mushroom at home.

Bio Clean Lab

Both cultivation and the introduction will take place in the Bio Clean Lab; our laboratory which is fully equipped for working with micro-organisms. This Clean Lab is not only available for individual artists and artist in residency programs but it is also the homebase for our Myco Insulation Brewery. A permanent exhibition and production line where we produce beer and grow mycelium insulation panels on the spent grains.

Fungi expert extraordinaire
-
Wouter Hassing has his own mushroom company in the North of Amsterdam.

About Wouter

Wouter Hassing can be seen as an authority in the field of local mushroom cultivation. In fact, people have been eating mycelium for ages. Tempeh is an ancient food that has its origins in Indonesia, where it is traditionally made from soy beans. During a controlled fermentation process the mycelium binds the beans together, turning regular soy beans into tempeh. Tempeh offers a very nutritious and delicious substitute for meat, if you know how to prepare it right.

Tickets / Facebook

Mycelium as a delicious meat substitute

It is said that the mushroom, and especially mycelium have the potential to replace all kinds of harmful materials such as plastics and batteries. At Mediamatic, we are interested in the cultural, artistic and culinary applications of mycelium. Another way in which mycelium could benefit the environment is by replacing meat in people’s diets, as meat production causes lots of pollution and is bad for the climate because of high carbon dioxide emissions. But regardless of its environmental and health benefits, the fact that tempeh can be very tasty is already a very good reason to include it in your menu!

Learn and grow

During this workshop you will learn all about the symbiosis between the mushroom and legume and the underlying microbiological process. Under the guidance of Sasker Scheerder you will prepare your own beans. You will gain a better understanding of preparing tempeh yourself using any legume you like. Two days after the workshop, the beans will have turned into tempeh and you can collect your self-made tempeh at Mediamatic!

Full grown tempeh
-
Made with black beans.

About Sasker Scheerder

Sasker Scheerder is the head of Manenwolf’s rokerij and foodlab. Which different techniques exist to extract smells and what are their pro’s and con’s? This edition of Odorama will be all about different techniques of distilling. We invited theoretical physicist Abel Jansma, olfactory artist Klara Ravat, the founders of RUIK and Peter Roessingh. This evening also marks the preview of our very own Aroma Lab which is made by Klara Ravat.

Tickets / Facebook

During this Odorama we will explore practices, techniques and tools for the olfactory artist. You are invited for an exclusive preview of the newly build Aroma Lab where you will find equipment and gadgets ready to create new scent designs.

Klara Ravat

Klara will spent a year in Amsterdam as artist-in-residence invited by VU university, Waag Society and Mediamatic. Klara creates media and odor artworks, installations and experimental films. By opposing the division between the realm of memory and the realm of experience, Ravat absorbs the tradition of remembrance art into daily practice. For the past years she has been developing works that relate to the sense of smell as a research on how we perceive through this sense. At the Aroma Lab she will be hosting a series of scented workshops, talks and other related fragranced activities.

dr. Peter Roessingh

What is a gas chromatography? Dr. Peter Roessingh from the University of Amsterdam will explain us everything about the principle of gas chromatography, an analytical chemical method for separating chemical substances. This method can be used in analysing scents and specify their moleculair composition. Roessingh will introduce us to the principles and talk about how the gas chromatography is used in analysing biological components.

Regina distributing aroma at Odorama
-
Regina as aroma jockey during Odorama: Art + Distillation

Abel Jansma

Abel has been focusing on performing vacuum distillation for Mediamatic, meaning distillation under low pressures to conserve a richer spectrum of aromas. For traditional distillation the boiling points of elements can be too high and therefore destroying the complex, often fragile molecules that constitute flavors and odors in the process. With Vacuum Distilling this could be prevented and offer an interesting tool for creating a complex aroma.

RUIK

Boye and Noëlle are RUIK and create their own perfumes without chemicals on an organic basis. For their first perfume VERSCHIL they made a design based on their childhood memory of the smell of orange peels. Nowadays 20.000.00 ton of orange peels are thrown away. RUIK uses organic orange peels that would have gone to waste otherwise as the basis for their perfume. Furthermore, they also turn the peels into paper using it for the packaging.

Info
Odorama: The Aroma Lab Edition
Thursday 9 March
Program starts at 20:00
Mediamatic Biotoop, Dijksgracht 6, Amsterdam
Tickets: €7,50 presale, €5 for students
- 4.91349148360598 52.3766641023636 The Aroma Lab Edition 2017-03-09 20:00:00 ARTEFACT event 1 http://www.mediamatic.net/id/670546 2017-02-20T10:22:39+01:00 Secretopia: From sci-fi to reality Fantastic Voyage movie discussion
Science fiction often invents devices before science does. This also goes for the movie Fantastic Voyage [1966] where a shrunken ship with crew enters a human body and moves around through the bloodstream, to surgically remove a blood clot. During this night we will zoom in on how Fantastic Voyage has been an inspiration for scientists to create new techniques for curing diseases.

The event is free of charge.

The special effects may have dated, as have the Cold War themes, but the almost real time adventure still has some tension to offer. The movie has a colourful psychedelic set design full of blobby globs and jellyfish like molecules. It is an absolute cult classic.

Secretopia is Mediamatic's new programme series that focusses on secretions, the stuff that comes out of your body.

Trailer:

Info:
Secretopia Fantastic Voyage
Language: English / Subtitles: None
Tuesday 14 March
Start 19:00 in the Haeckelroom
Mediamatic Biotoop, Dijksgracht 6, Amsterdam
Free entrance
- 4.91349148360598 52.3766641023636 2017-03-14 19:00:00 ARTEFACT event 1 http://www.mediamatic.net/id/670057 2017-02-20T16:04:58+01:00 Meet Zeger Reyers Discuss your work, ideas and obstacles with the artist
A new breed of artists is on the rise. They work with living matter, nature and have a strong emphasis in biology and life sciences. In this emerging field of Bio-Art and Design there’s need for extensive collaboration. Not only between the different disciplines involved, but also between generations. That's why we invited renowned installation artist Zeger Reyers to become a Mediamatic Fellow. This means that he will be a regular attendee of the Mediamatic Biotoop, with scheduled consults for you to attent to. Exchange your ideas and sign up for a one on one with Zeger Reyers.

For Whom?

Are you stuck with your project? Close to finishing your finals at art academy? Do you need advice on how to work with organic matter? Or are you interested to learn what obstacles you encounter while producing living installations? The conversations with Zeger are meant for anyone who has a special interest in art and biology. But don't be surprised to end up in a conversation about distilling and old kopper kettles, because Zeger is also a passionate fermentor of liqueurs.

Exchange your ideas

During the consults you will sit down with Zeger Reyers to discuss you work, ideas and challenges. You can expect an honest talk filled with (unwanted) advice and original ideas. The conversations will take place in the Aquaponics Farm at the Biotoop. A green location for some thorough thought exchange.

Consult with Zeger Reyers

Zeger Reyers

Zeger Reyers is a Dutch installation artist with a strong fascination for biological processes like eating and growing, budding, blossoming and dying. Using all sorts of living materials Zeger shows typical processes in different biotopes. He makes objects that are shaped by living materials, such as furniture and machines that are overgrown by mushrooms or chairs he sunk in the Oosterschelde that have been covered by mussels. And he is renowned for his rotating kitchen. Reyer's artworks provoke a new way of seeing these natural processes, by juxtaposing the human controllable versus natures uncontrollable.

The consults of an hour will take place monthly between 13:00 - 16:00 on the following dates:

19 January
16 February
15 March

You can sign up for the monthly meetings with Zeger by sending your request to: floor.matla@mediamatic.net
- 4.91349148360598 52.3766641023636 Meet Zeger Reyers d d 2017-03-15 13:00:00 ARTEFACT event 1 http://www.mediamatic.net/id/670538 2017-02-07T15:09:26+01:00 Regeneration - Biotalk Presentations and demo's on the topic of eco-revitalization
Regeneration – Biotalk is a collaboration between Transnatural and Mediamatic and consists of two nights full of exciting talks and projects revolving around the topic of restoring and revitalizing our ecology. On the long term, this phenomenon, together with the continuous growth of the earth’s population, will generate a problematic situation. The Salt Project tries to offer a possible solution to this problem by means of architecture built from seawater. Architect/ designer Eric Geboers will discuss The Salt Project’s research and progress so far.

Ivan Henriques - Caravel
Microbial Fuel Cells, or MFC’s, are devices that use bacteria in wastewater as the catalyst to oxidise organic matter and generate electricity. Ivan Henriques developed Caravel, a floating mobile robotic structure which harvests and stores energy from these MFC’s. The harvested energy is then applied to move the robotic structure that is able to clean the polluted environment with the help of water-purifying plants that are integrated in the structure.

Caroline Slomp - Recovering the sea’s dead zones
Due to a lack of oxygen in certain areas, the sea has many so-called ‘dead zones’. Professor of Biogeochemistry (at Utrecht University) Caroline Slomp investigates how these dead zones come into being, and whether burying phosphate in the seabed can help to solve this problem. Professor Slomp will tell more about her field research and her quest for a healthy sea.

Demo's

Robyn Tayler Payne - Mist Capturing Surface
The Salt Project - Eric Geboers.

Transnatural - Regeneration

This program is part of the Regeneration exhibition by Transnatural. It is one of the best ways to produce food in the city, because it hardly takes up any space. The fish excrement feeds the plants, and the plants clean the water for the fish. In this way, not a drop is wasted. In this workshop you will learn how to build a miniponics system, a miniature, home-edition of the bigger Aquaponics towers.

Tickets / Facebook

Aquaponics?

The 'Aquaponic Gardening Community' describes Aquaponics as "the cultivation of fish and plants together in a constructed, recirculating ecosystem utilizing natural bacterial cycles to convert fish waste to plant nutrients. This is an environmentally, friendly, natural food-growing method that harnesses the best attributes of aquaculture and hydroponics, without the need to discard any water or filtrate or add chemical fertilizer." The Mediamatic Aquaponics team is currently building an urban oasis based on this ecofriendly system.

Check this video about Aquaponics by WhatTheFood

Program

We start the day with a tour through Biotoop Dijksgracht and the Aquaponics site. Here at Mediamatic we are interested in the cultural and artistic applications of this 'new' bio-material and invite you to start exploring it for yourself. During this introduction course you will learn how to cultivate the Oyster Mushroom at home and by doing so gain a better understanding of the potential of this organism.

About Sasker Scheerder

Sasker Scheerder is the head of Manenwolf’s rokerij and foodlab. He uses all kinds of natural processes for making foods, such as smoking, drying, salting, fermenting, infuse, brooding and pickle. Often, these are ancient techniques for food preparation but Sasker uses them to create exciting new foods, trying to defy bad taste and loveless foods. During his tempeh workshop, he makes tempeh out of a wide variety of organic beans.

Bio Clean Lab

Both the introduction and the preparation of the tempeh will take place in the Bio Clean Lab; our laboratory which is fully equipped for working with micro-organisms. The Clean Lab is not only available for individual artists and artist in residency programs but is also the homebase for our own Myco Insulation Brewery, a permanent exhibition and production line where we produce beer and grow mycelium insulation panels on the spent grains of the brewing process.

Info

Workshop: Tempeh
Friday 26 May, 14:45 - 17:00
Mediamatic Biotoop, Dijksgracht 6, Amsterdam
Tickets: Regular €40,- / Student €28,- (excl.
