We celebrated the final week of Sur Place with the MeBike world championship of dream bicycles, fashion performances by Milena Heussler and Girls on Bikes, and the Subbacultcha! After Midnight party and book launch.

<h3>Sur Place</h3> Sur Place has come to an end. The exhibition on urban bike culture attracted dare devils, housewives, cool kids and creatures, bicycle fanatics and gear collectors. Mediamatic Bank shows the traces of two months of racing, collecting and sharing of thoughts and ideas. We celebrated the closing of the exhibition with the MeBike race, a Subbacultcha! Tonight the teams were introduced, and while game plans were being made, there were live music and performances. We announced what materials the MeBike participants would be using, and toasted to a successful dream bike race. Their process was documented by a television crew. There were performances, and plenty of bands and djs. In the evening the MeBike race took place (the Queen Bike won!) and there was live music by Half-Way Station, Supercity and The Missing Slippers. Milena Heussler and Girls on Bikes gave two fashion performances, and at midnight Subbacultcha! opened their After Midnight exhibition. Hounds of Hate were over from London, and Strange Boutique played a few nice tunes. Mediamatic vierde de laatste week van Sur Place met een feestje. Er was een MeBike droomfiets wedstrijd, mode performances van Milena Heussler en Girls on Bikes, en tot slot de Subbacultcha! After Midnight party en boeklancering.

<h3>Sur Place</h3> Sur Place is tot een einde gekomen. De expositie werd bezocht door waaghalzen, huisvrouwen, hipsters en heremieten, fietsfanaten en verzamelaars. Twee maanden van racen, verzamelen, en ideeën uitwisselen hebben hun sporen achtergelaten. MeBike viert de fiets in al zijn glorie, en biedt mensen de mogelijkheid hun eigen droomfiets te bouwen. De verschillende ploegen werden voorgesteld. Er waren performances van Tina Vila, Nina Boas en Bike Girls, dj's en vuurwerk. MeBike 2010</a> <h3>Zaterdag, 14 augustus</h3> De teams begonnen aan het bouwen van hun fietsen. Het proces werd gefilmd door een televisieploeg. Terwijl er hard werd gewerkt waren er performances, bands en djs. 's Avonds was er live muziek van Half-Way Station, Supercity en The Missing Slippers. Om acht uur ging de MeBike race van start. De grote Queen Bike won de race genadeloos. Na de prijsuitreiking begon Milena Heusslers' herenmode performance. Vervolgens lieten Girls on Bikes de laatste mode op het gebied van leggings zien, en begon om middernacht Subbacultcha!'s After Midnight expositie. Hounds of Hate was over uit Londen, en Strange Boutique kwam plaatjes draaien. The fixie subculture lacks the political dimension that characterized subversive subcultures of the past. What is it trying to communicate?

In 1979 cultural theorist Dick Hebdige broke down the meaning of style for subcultural groups wanting to mark themselves as opposed to the mainstream. He pointed to Teddy Boys of the 1950s who mocked Britain's social decline by dressing in a flamboyant bourgeois style, and Punks who are never too far from their politically charged leather jackets; adorned with studs, animal prints, and patches of all types. Clothing as expression is one thing, but what is to be said about bicycles as expression? In urban environments around the world, the fixed-gear subculture is becoming noticeably more present. Aside from the increase in traffic violations, fixed-gear riders are visible because of their advanced codes of subcultural definition. Signifying themselves with a hipster-utilitarian style of dress, an affinity for varied forms of street art, and the combined smell of bike grease and Pabst Blue Ribbon, it is still the (handmade) fixed-gear bicycle which stands alone as the most sacrosanct subcultural commodity. It is the Punk's leather jacket, or the Teddy Boy's drain-pipe trouser. Spoke cards, sawed handle bars, vintage parts, and that which seems amateur (for instance an amateur paint job or a deteriorated frame) may point to a genuine fixed-gear enthusiast, but still it is difficult to flesh out the posers. What makes it difficult is that this subculture lacks the political dimension that characterized subversive subcultures of the past. Certainly not anarchistic or anti-capitalist, fixed-gear riders seem complacent within our often shunned economic hegemony, because there is no way to reconcile the fact that it's an expensive hobby. And ambivalently feminist, the fixed gear subculture encourages more girls on bikes, but Melbourne based cyclist collective Sugar Spokes puts it well when they explain they have no agenda beyond “more women riding = more people riding = good.” So then what is this subculture trying to communicate with their personalized and hyper-individual fixed-gear bicycles? Perhaps it's simply a postmodern subculture of Generation Y, which, like hipster-dom, is characterized by general apathy and consistent hedonism. Or, equally possible is that I have once again sought out a theoretical underpinning for a cultural practice that is merely about community, practicality, and adaptive urbanism? Saturday June 19th, the fabulous Keng Pereira taught a group of eager cyclists how to ride a fixed gear bike.

After a short introduction into the history of track bikes, and a tour through the Sur Place exhibition, everybody hopped on a bike. Time to hit the road to get some hands-on experience! The Bright Bike project is the brainchild of Michael Mandiberg, senior fellow at Eyebeam (New York). A Bright Bike is a Retroreflective Vinyl coated bike. It's like coating your bike with a big sticker that turns ultra-bright in headlights. During this workshop you can use one of the pre-made kits supplied by Michael. You can choose between caterpillar or pin stripes, and from a small selection of colors. Or you can cut out your own design. There will be a range of retroreflective vinyl in various colors. Great for people who want to cover their bike in stars or flowers, or whatever shapes and forms rock your bike loving socks. American tattoo and graffiti artist Mike Giant explains what makes riding a fixed gear bike so special.

Without any concept or idea beforehand of what he's going to make, graffiti and tattoo artist Mike Giant fills the wall inside the Mediamatic Bank with various types of words and letters. The wall painting is part of ‘<a href="http://www.mediamatic.net/page/135402/nl?lang=en">Sur Place</a>’, Mediamatic’s new exhibition on urban bike culture. New York born graffiti- and tattoo artist Mike Giant became popular in New York's urban culture scene. His work is characterized by a mixture of death, erotica, old school hand drawings and elements of pop culture. Giant, himself a big lover of the fixed gear bike, came to Amsterdam to promote the bicycle, which is ‘the healthy alternative to the destructive car’. Mike’s wall painting is on view until the 22th of August. What do you like about fixed gear bicycles? 'It's a return to the past, in some ways. But also a sign of the future. We have to recognize that the things we do and produce have an effect on the world around us. And a bicycle can have a really profound, positive effect on life in general. People don’t realize how dangerous cars really are.' So your interest in the bicycle is also ideologically motivated? 'Absolutely. The main reason I am in Amsterdam now, is to support cycling. I don’t like to travel for art shows anymore. I tried to develop a track-cycling culture in Amsterdam when I lived here two years ago. It’s really interesting to come back and see how it has developed. The joy and connection people have. They share an interest, and in this case it’s cycling.' You tried to introduce fixed gear bicycles in Amsterdam? 'The fixed-gear bicyle is an urban phenomenon. The hip, young people have been riding them for a long time, because messengers have an underground status. A lot of my friends in the nineties were track bikers, and a lot of the early graffiti-writers in New York city in the seventies were track bikers as well. If you see somebody riding a fixed gear bike and he puts you on it, you are like: ‘Great, I want to have this thing too!’' What is so special about riding the fixed gear bike? 'It’s one of those things you try to conquer. When you start riding a fixed gear bike, it's really tricky. You have to be super careful. Over a period of time, you start to get into it and then your body just knows how to do it and you can start to play around. It’s just fun. If it wasn’t fun, people wouldn’t do it. And I also do meditation practice. On a track bike you can stand still. To do that, you have to suspend your attention. For me, the best way to do that is to focus on something across the street, for example a traffic signal. I just sit there, let go the handlebars, and let my body find the balance. If you think about it, you lose the balance. If you relax, there is a kind of a zen moment there. It’s quite peaceful. It’s one of the moments that the bicycle can show you bigger things. And also there are not many people doing it, so there is a community.' Do you think that in ten years everybody in Amsterdam rides the fixed gear bicycle? 'Amsterdam has such an old bycicle tradition, that I didn’t expect that the Dutch people would really take to the fixed gear. It’s impractible and a little difficult to ride the fixed gear bike, but once you get used to it, I think it’s actually better. The regular Dutch street bike is so stable, that I don’t think it will ever get replaced. But there will be people who ride the fixed-gear bike. Because it’s the original bicycle too. The first generation of what we consider as bicycles now were fixed gears. They didn’t have a breaking mechanism for a while. People will say it’s crazy to ride a track bike, but everybody did it a hundred years ago.' Another subject: your art. Why is it so succesful in the skateboard- and bicycleworld? 'There is something about being a graffity artist: you have to do it. You can’t just talk about it. As a graffity artist you start out very simple, maybe by making just a tag, a signature. Then you move your way up to developing complex letter systems. So it all starts with fundamentals. I think that I work from those fundamentals. And when you do that, people recognize that you have been gone through the process of understanding something fully. And then you add your own voice. There is also something with the handdraw-qualities of my work. Especially in this computer age it really resonates with people. People know it is difficult to draw, they know it is difficult to do nice handwriting. How many people really make things these days? Most people do nine-to-five jobs in front of a computer, making something imaginary for someone else. I have never put up with that. Not a long time at least. I think there is something powerful about stepping outside the norm. And that could be something a cyclist can do.'
