Costumes and cotton candy with the whole family on Sunday, but first a performance on Saturday afternoon, and some serious flirting and dancing during Push Me Tender in the evening. Calling all lovers, loners, and globetrotting hepcats - we've got two live bands, an analogue veejay, swingers dating, and an oyster bar. Please RSVP on this page.

Line-up

Because these cold nights are just simply too chilly to spend alone, we've invited two duo's to perform. Johann (aka Fyoelk) and Hannah (aka Moemlien) are Cotopaxi and improvise with found objects and acoustic instruments. Rik Mölhlmann and Gijs Deddens of Vakantie play live electronic synthesizer music. In between acts deejay Groener Gras will provide us with plenty of nice tunes, and analogue veejay Margarita Osipian will serve up some visual treats. An evening of new music, surreal swinging, and experimental dating.

Drop by in the afternoon as well. Attempt to Fly, a performance by dramaturg Roos Euwe and director Céline Talens, will take place at 14.00 and 15.30. Find out more here.

No longer a duo? Ecovative is the birth place of the myco-material that sparked the beginning of the Paddestoelen Paradijs exhibition and the Mycelium Rising project.

In the words of Paul Stamets, 'mushrooms can save the world', and there's no better place to see these world saving powers than in a tucked away industrial area in Green Island, New York. With the goal of replacing everything from petroleum based plastics (like Styrofoam) to particle board (which is made using carcinogenic formaldehyde) with a renewable mycelium based material, Ecovative is harnessing all the world saving possibilities of the mushroom. Eben Bayer, the CEO of Ecovative, took us on a little tour of this rapidly expanding facility.

The Process

Having only seen the finished mycelium based materials, and some experimental prototypes, I was really excited and curious to see the whole process of making, or rather growing, this innovative material on a much larger industrial scale.

The process begins with the collection of agricultural products, which come by the truckload from farms in the region. Each material requires its own unique mix of agricultural waste products, depending on its density, weight, and use.

The material then goes through a steam pasteurization system which gets rid of any mold or contamination. Eben told us that the machine used to do this originally came from an old chocolate chip factory, and they re-made it into a patented pasteurizing machine.
Pasteurization system for the agricultural waste
Looking around the factory, these 'frankenstein' machines are a common sight, with young employees building and experimenting with new machine designs using recycled materials, including bicycle wheels.

Once the substrate (the agricultural waste base on which the mycelium will grow) is pasteurized, it is inoculated with mycelium in a clean room, and molded into a form.
 Mold for mycelium-based materials

These molded forms are put on racks indoors for about a week while the mycelium grows through the substrate.
 Racks for molded myco-materials

In the final step, the parts are popped out of their molds and dried in order to stop the growth.
 Ecovative Sample Materials

New Factory

 The new Ecovative factory space
Arriving at a transitional time for the company, I was able to see the new, and much bigger, factory space across the street that Ecovative was just in the process of moving into. They are keeping their original space as a place to focus on research and development and design, but moving all industrial production into the new factory.

Research and development.

What began as a biodegradable replacement for polystyrene, that one-use packing material which uses vats of oil to produce and sits in landfills for millions of years, has now grown to become a potential replacement for many plastic based materials.

At the Ecovative factory they are constantly experimenting with new kinds of fungus and working on pilot projects proposed to them by some very big companies. They have even teamed up with Ford to develop car bumpers and other car parts out of mycelium based materials, which you can read all about here. Many of their projects are in the experimental phases, and are still top secret, so I can't spill any information here, but trust me that there are some amazing projects brewing in the research lab. The newest issue of Wired has a very indepth article about Ecovative, and further proves what the director of Mediamatic has been saying all along, that mushrooms are the new new media.

Find out everything that Ecovative is up to on their website, and if you ever find yourself in Green Island, NY, you can even go on a little tour yourself.
margarita osipian http://www.mediamatic.net/id/133933 ARTICLE text 1 http://www.mediamatic.net/id/242253 2012-02-06T12:21:54+01:00 The Secret Art of Growing Mushrooms Learn how to make your own wood-based substrate on which to grow Shiitake mushrooms
There are several ways of making substrate (substrate is the growing environment for mushrooms). The three most common methods are with a compost-base, with a sawdust-or wood-chip based mixtures, and using straw. In this workshop we will make a sawdust substrate. You will take your substrate bag home after the workshop, where you can wait to see the mushrooms grow in the comfort of your own home.

What?

30 years ago the white button mushroom was the only mushroom you could find in the supermarket. A lot of things have changed in the meantime, but most people still only eat the white button mushrooms. Getting people to grow and consume all the varieties of mushrooms has been a slow process. This workshop is innovative and exciting because growing your own mushrooms is a new form of agricultural technology.

We begin the workshop by sterilising the sawdust in a pressure cooker to get rid of the existing mold and fungus spores that are often naturally present on the wood. After we cool down the wood chips we add agra-vermiculite, gypsum and water to make the substrate mixture. Every substance is weighed and measured properly before we mix them thoroughly together and add water to the mixture. Once the substrate is ready, we add the mushroom spawn (Shiitake) and put the finished mixture in special filter bags and seal them. Instructions on how to take care of your mushrooms once you've taken them home will be given during the workshop.

Information and cost

The workshop takes place at Mediamatic BANK on Saturday January 28 from 13:00 to 18:00. Bypassing their no-weapons policy, one of the parts they uploaded is the only part you need to have a license to buy (in the US). Enticed by the questions this raised, Roel and Micha started their own research into the limits of open source. What about open source drugs?

Rami Ismail and Laurens de Gier

Rami and Laurens will present Glitchhiker, winner of the 2011 Global Game Jam Nederland (jury + audience award). In Glitchhiker the player wasn't the only one who had lives: the game did too. Every time a player died, the game lost a life. The more lost lives (the game started off with 100), the more distorted the game became, until it finally died. It cannot be played anymore. But it's still nice to look at.

The game Glitchhiker, Winner of the 2011 Global Game Jam Nederland, found on Global Game Jam

Anne van Diepeningen

Anne van Diepeningen at Ignite 14

Before Anne started working for the CBS (Fungal Biodiversity Centre), she did research into the Podospora anserina, a fungus that ages.
