With a group of great hackers, designers and engineers the camp aims to bring together creativity, knowledge, and skills from various fields and disciplines to realize innovative and creative uses of RFID technology. Within only five days a number of projects will be created for the approximately 2000 PICNIC visitors carrying around RFID-tagged badges. The projects created will run throughout the conference at various places for people to play with the objects and the objects with them.

The uniformity of the projects lies in a few requirements that emerged form the first brainstorm. First of all, all projects make use of the available RFID tags. Secondly the projects should need no explanation to the audience and should give instant satisfaction. Intuitive and easy to use is an important aim of all projects, because the context is people walking around at the PICNIC conference. It’s a social thing. Thirdly, the projects are focused on social networking. It should support sociality, get people to connect and know each other. It uses and adds to the AnyMeta database, where visitors of PICNIC create a profile page forming the PICNIC network. There aren’t that many mandatory fields in the profile for visitors to fill in, but the database will be filled with new data that is generated during interaction with the projects and other visitors. Social networking becomes a blended physical and digital experience leading into new kinds of hybrid profiles and friendships.

Before the actual launch of the camp, participants already posted some first ideas for projects on the Mediamatic workshop page. After an introduction of all participants, and distribution of some essential hardware for this camp, these ideas function as basis for a first collective brainstorm session. The participants form groups, rather dynamically and self-organizing, around the project proposals that are suggested and open for debate. Half way through the day, these initial ideas about projects have merged and evolved into six concrete proposals, which can be read in more detail on the projects page of this site. The current running projects are supported by volunteers working together with the participants to realize the projects.
During the day this team started to collaborate with Connection Cushion / Wireless RFID Reader, because this project aims to create an infrastructure for mobile RFID readers. This project is led by Tim Olden from Blendid and Melanie Rieback, RFID researcher and privacy enthusiast from the VU. She's hoping to send out hoards of rogue agents who will secretly scan any RFID tags you have on you, and will use them to learn more about your habits at PICNIC.

More participants in this camp similarly play with the ongoing privacy debate surrounding RFID and personal information collection more generally with the aim of raising awareness about these issues.
In the following days posts on this camp addressing the development of the projects will be posted on this blog.
Esther Weltevredehttp://www.mediamatic.net/id/22711ARTICLE1http://www.mediamatic.net/id/228782009-10-17T04:05:52+02:00Construction time!Mediamatic RFID & Physical Computing Hackers Camp @ Picnic 07
Projects are ready to be prototyped and build. This monday all participants are working individually or with a small number of people on parts of the projects. You might think a “hackers camp” only includes hardware and software hacking and tweaking. Today there was however some old style building going on with hammers and saws. Transforming our hackers into wood hackers.

The Photo Booth team had some delays waiting for crucial material to arrive. The time was spend usefully fine-tuning and redesigning their project before the actual build. Measuring the most optimal distance for the camera position in the booth for optimal framing is crucial to know before construction.

PICNIC related conferences are already starting downstairs. This means loud building activities have to be relocated or wait till later in the evening to start building... Timo , Einar and Anne descide to work "on location" and build the Photo Booth up in the entrance hall of PICNIC where their project will be located. While Jørn is programming the backside of Photo Booth in the camp. If anyone was wondering if it was buildable, the Photo Booth is drawed out IKEA-style. Well measured ready made parts, quickly to assemble.

They did have some unexpected luck as well. First they found this nice picnic carpet in a container dumpster. It is exactly what they need for their project.

Secondly, the Photo booth designers are swapping skills with programmers Andy, Mika and Erik. The designers will make the enclosure for the lights. The programmers will do the programming part of the Photo Booth. What needs to be done by programmers is also nicely drawn out in a sketch. Red means they need help!

Exit Poll is on schedule. The software is almost done and the parts almost ready. Tomorrow they will be ready to assemble. Andy is making sure the votes read by the RFID reader identify the RFID badge and feed this data into the database. They are however not really sure what more data to input to the database and what to do with it. This still needs some thinking. Mika is doing the programming for the lights and connecting it to arduino. So your vote will make lights stronger, weaker, different according to the number of votes they got. Andy connected three RFID readers representing the voting options for the visitors to the database. “It’s a musical instrument” he says, it bleeps and lights up when a tag is read.

It only needs to be connected to the database. Johannes is working on that.

It's 7 AM in the morning and we stayed the night over with nine hackers. Most of us gave up sleep one hour ago and decided to work through the night. We hope to realize at least five or six of the projects by morning. Some of us take a quick power nap. To get an impression how hackers live at night, there are some more pictures after the jump...
Esther Weltevredehttp://www.mediamatic.net/id/22711ARTICLE1http://www.mediamatic.net/id/231432007-10-02T10:21:49+02:00PICNIC 07 owned by hackersMediamatic RFID & Physical Computing Hackers Camp @ Picnic 07
Working long hours with hardly any sleep paid off really well. The projects lived up to the camp’s aim of creating fun and easy to use social RFID applications beyond expectations. During PICNIC the projects were very well received by the visitors, speakers and media and attracted a lot of attention.

All projects with the exception of the Connection Cushion were finished on time. If we would have had one or two more extra days it could have been done, but within the time span of four days it was unfortunately not feasible. The other projects were up and running at the beginning of PICNIC on Wednesday. Most of the projects had some updates and needed some trouble shooting during the event, but there were no big problems. Having that many projects up and running in a period of four days made everyone very happy and was more than expected beforehand. The group selected by Mediamatic turned out to be productive and very well balanced in expertise. Long hardworking hours were made and we had a lot of fun in the process. All participants had their own projects they were working on, but they helped out at other projects where possible. To end this report of a very successful hackers camp, a youtube movie taken at Pablos Holman’s talk about Implementing Science Fiction. Pablos was so kind to include the projects in his talk on the main stage:

But did you know there is tons of "intelligence" on the internet about you? Using the iTea installation is like visiting Aunty Betsy: plenty of first class gossip... However, this time the gossip is about you. And it's all on the net, so it must be true, right?

How does it work?

Drop your ikTag in the old porcelain teacup. The system will start searching the social network for information about you. It will conduct a Google search, and even use information found on social networks like Flickr, Hyves, Facebook and Hotmail. You'll be surprised as to how much it can find about you online. The information will appear as ripples on the table and move outwards. Be aware of your online image!

Why?

You might be surprised to find out how much there is to know about yourself. This innocent looking teacup will reveal so much, it's downright scary. A voyeuristic feeling will creep over you and everyone else at the tea table when you see the "facts" of your life spill out over the table. Yes, you will deny some of the things the teacup says. But will people believe you? It's your word against the Internets.

In this voyeur-friendly world we want to make people aware of how open ones life actually is. RFID tags are invading our life rapidly, making it incredibly easy to access, collect and distribute (private) information about people.

---------[day two - beginning]--------------------------------------------------------------
There's an opening discussion about Usability and User Expereince for all projects, and when it comes to the idea of Badge collection, somethings are teased out about the intial idea - that it should be more about wearing badges as a way of grouping, displaying a tribe/following etc and therefore the MagicMirror idea doesnt really do that because it is more of a personal interaction. So suggest to go back to the physical object - print out badges!
or stickers, or both.

General questions about participation/reward, engagement/interest for the projects.

Social Networking aspects

----------[day one]------------------------------------------------------------------------
The project was brought up and discussed; could be worth a try, it becomes more the magic mirror idea: the badges are virtual displayed on the body, the icons/images are related to content groups on the PICNIC Network.
Jim is working on making a first prototype in MaxMSP JITTER to show the idea for the next day.
After second discussion and groupings, Mark and Audery join the group - hooray.
Now we talk more about how to make the social aspect stronger, how to retrieve the images from the network and generally how to enhance the use experience.
The visualisation aspect of the mirror and display is worked on by Jim
The graphic design for bagdes is sketched by Audrey
----------[initial thoughts]---------------------------------------------------------------
I wonder that these clear LF rfid tags makes an ideal badge in itself,
look even as a fashion accessory, broach, earring etc.
But this hack is using HF tags right?though metal badges don't work with RFID tags so we consider going virtual...

Virtual collection:
Using the tags to get the ID of the visitor.
Have a magic mirror display. When the visitor looks into it - can see themselves reflected with the badges attached to their shirt in the image.
What the badges are, what they look like - it could be depending on several categories.
Perhaps they have to wear a special marker badge for video tracking?

A few options we are considering:
-the participants wears a special badge which can be recognised by the software, upon which the virtual badge is displayed.
-the sofware approximates the position of the person's chest, upon which the virtual badge is displayed.

the badges themselves - what do they show?
-how many contacts do people have? (badges according to #)
-project badges, what projects/installations have people visited?
-friend badges, showing photos of the participant's friends or 'contacts'.
-network barrometer badges, showing how many 'contacts' the person has.

What we need:

- RFID reader (let's say two)
- Video camera to be hooked up to machine
- Machine (Mac)
- Screen (LCD, huuuuuugggge!)
- Video software, Jim has MaxMSP, there's a trial we can run on the machine.
- Hardware (of the non-technical kind) to make a booth/display
Jim Woodhttp://www.mediamatic.net/id/17347Mark Wubbenhttp://www.mediamatic.net/id/21174ideacritikhttp://www.mediamatic.net/id/22753ARTEFACTprojectidea1http://www.mediamatic.net/id/227422007-09-25T09:48:12+02:00RFID racket readerhow many tags do you carry?
We're transferring old tennisrackets into RFID-readers with the purpose to make you aware you probably already are wearing RFID-tags with you.

This will involve an Arduino which will give the right commands to the RFID reader. When the setup finds a tag, it will do some action, probably make a sound, blink a led, or ... both!

*requirements:

-hardware

-three tennis rackets (already taken care of)
-three RFID readers (also already taken care of)
-three Arduinos (depends still, but we better have them ;-))
-three battery holders (already taken care of)
-everything for the icing on the cake once the setup works as expected, think: light, noise etcetera, shouldn't be too hard ;-)

-software

-possibility one:
flash the RFID-reader so it'll boot in a 'seek tag' mode

-possibility two:
hook up an arduino which will feed the 'seek tag' command through a serial connection.
