anyMeta 4.19.3 - Atom module 0.3.2 2012-02-16T16:48:44+01:00 http://www.mediamatic.net/feed/atom/27857/nl Mediamatic 2007 http://www.mediamatic.net/id/12501 2011-07-13T12:08:32+02:00 Night Garden met Kiem Restaurant Technological fauna <p>Night Garden was een subtechnische indoor tuin die een relatie legde tussen nieuwe technologie, next nature, hedendaagse kunst en de consumptie ervan.</p> <p>Deze exhibitie duurde van 3 november tot 7 januari en bracht meerdere workshops, presentaties salons en zelfs eetgelegenheden met zich mee.</p> <h6>Wintertuin</h6> <p>Mediamatic's wintertuin, de <em>Night Garden</em>, was een fauna vol techniek, kunst en eten, waarin de bezoeker tot een cybernetisch nachtdier transformeert. Kiem Cuisine was het eerste kiem-stamppotjes restaurant ter wereld. And you can have a really great dinner as well!<br/> Open Thurs / Frid / Sat from 6 - 11 pm</p> <p>Mediamatic's <em>Night Garden</em>, is teeming with technology, art and food. Visitors can expect to be transformed into a cybernetic nocturnal animal, build robots at a garden robot production studio, wander through a digital alter-garden, learn about mating call science, experience psycho-chemical garden furniture and eat at a prototype restaurant serving more than 30 sorts of sprouted micro-greens. </p> <p>The garden is open on thurdays, fridays and saturdays between 6 and 11 p.m.</p> <p>Participating artists:<br/> Christa Sommerer &amp; Laurent Mignonneau combine nature, technology and a passion for the principles of evolution with strong visual aesthetics. In the Night Garden they will present their now classic work, <em>Interactive Plant Growing</em>, one of the most sensational interactive works of the last century. </p> <p>Artist-scientist Felix Hess in <em>Vanes</em> creates a flowerbed from fragile paper. Catching the tiniest air turbulence, the flowers produce a ballet, both spectacular and subtle. </p> <p>Especially for Night Garden, Mateusz Herczka developed <em>Enhanced Bench</em>, a garden bench that has a marked positive effect on those that sit upon it. Autonomous for a robot, that is. During the course of the exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to solder their own small robots together and set them free in the garden.</p> <p>Debra Solomon opens the doors to her prototype Microgreen Sproutstaurant <em>Grow yer own dang food</em>, in which no less than 3 sorts of potato mash and 30 kinds of sprouts and cress provide the basis for a delicious tasting experience. Vanaf thuis kon je inloggen op een persoon van je keuze. Je stuurde de avatars aan en ontdekte wat je met hem of haar kon doen. De avatars waren beschikbaar op wo, do en vr van 20.00 tot 23.00 uur <a href="http://girlfriend.mediamatic.net">via deze link</a>.</p> <p>De avatars waren van 18.00 tot 23.00 uur ook live te observeren in hun Analoge Villa. Vanaf zes uur kon je dineren bij de avatars. Hun favoriete maaltijd: DIY Sushi, een concept van Debra Solomon/culiblog.org. Iedere avond ook workshops: Maak je eigen Sokpop en ontdek meer over je non- verbale flirtkwaliteiten.</p> <h6>First or Real Life?</h6> <p>De onstuimige groei van online avatar communities zoals <em>Second Life</em> en <em>World of Warcraft</em> heeft ertoe geleid dat mensen in toenemende mate online een sociaal en economisch bestaan kunnen opbouwen. Tegelijk roept deze ontwikkeling vragen op over de aard van dit bestaan en de gevolgen die het voor omgangsvormen in 'first-life', het werkelijke bestaan, zal hebben.</p> <p>Wanneer je gebruik maakt van virtuele avatars kun je doen en laten wat je wilt. In <em>The Girlfriend Experience</em> moest je elkaar eerst aftasten. Speler en avatar onderzochten wat ze aan elkaar hebben en hoe ver de avatar wil gaan in het uitvoeren van specifieke wensen. Wie hier de controle heeft was misschien niet altijd even duidelijk. Je kreeg tien minuten om uit te vinden wat je met je avatar kan doen. Daarna was je tijd om en mag een ander je plaats innemen.</p> <p>De titel van het project, <em>The Girlfriend Experience</em>, verwijst naar het paradoxale karakter dat veel sociaal gedrag online heeft. Enerzijds de veilige anonimiteit van het gebruik van de avatar, anderzijds de intieme ontboezemingen en projecties van verlangen die zich makkelijker uiten. Voor Martin Butler is het precies dit samenvallen van twee schijnbare uitersten, anonimiteit en intimiteit, dat een belangrijk deel van het hedendaagse sociale verkeer typeert. De eerste avond kreeg iedere speler maximaal drie minuten om een avatar te leren kennen. De belangstelling was overweldigend. You could log in at home with your character of choice. Every evening we offered workshops: make your own sock puppet and discover you non-verbal flirtings skills.</p> <p><a href="http://girlfriend.mediamatic.net">Visit the avatars by clicking here: http://girlfriend.mediamatic.net</a>.</p> <h6>Real or First Life?</h6> <p>The rampant growth of online avatar communities such as <em>Second Life</em> and <em>World of Warcraft</em> has enabled the creation of a personal online social and economic existence. Simultaneously this triggers inherent questions about this existence, as it questions what the consequences will be for <em>first life</em>, or <em>reality</em>.</p> <p>When you use virtual avatars you can do as you please. In <em>The Girlfriend Experience</em> you had to get to know each other first. Player and avatar explored what they can do for each other and how far the avatar wanted to go to execute specific desires. It was ambiguous who was really controlling the situation. You had ten minutes to figure out what you can do with your avatar. After that, your time was up and another player could take your place.</p> <p>The title of the project, <em>The Girlfriend Experience</em>, denoted the paradoxical character that online social interaction has. On one hand, the safe anonymity by using the avatar, on the other the intimate releases and projections that can spread easily. For Martin Butler it was this merging of two apparent extremes, anonymity and intimacy, which characterized an important part of contemporary social traffic. This workshop is an opportunity for anyone to learn how to process and organize sounds, how to map and program physical interactions, video processing and networking possibilities using Pure Data. Pure Data is a free, open source software tool.</p> <h2>What and why?</h2> <p>PD, originally developed by Miller Puckette in the 1990s, is currently an open source project and has a large developer base working on new extensions to the program. It has become a pioneering application in the contemporary art field.<br/> PD, just as Max, is a dataflow programming language. In such a language, functions or &quot;objects&quot; are linked or &quot;patched&quot; together in a graphical environment which models the flow of audio- or videodata or controldata (when you use PD to control the input or output of other hardware). <br/> In the workshop the participants will learn the basics of using PD, the basics of sound synthetisation and they will build their own PureData sound- video 0r control patches. </p> <h2>Trainers</h2> <p><a href="http://obiwannabe.co.uk/">Andy J. Farnell</a> is a composer, open source software developer and computer scientist from the UK. Andy has produced many works for the BBC, film and game projects and some well known music bands.</p> <p>Furthermore, participants will be assisted by <a href="http://www.mediamatic.net/person-13579-en.html">Kostya Leonenko</a> , who studied sonology at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag.</p> <h2>Participants</h2> <p>Nerds, musicians, artists, programmers and designers. We'll start from scratch, so programming skills will not be required, but will come in handy of course. Participants will need some technical affinity. </p> <h2>Workshop Report</h2> <p>by <a href="http://www.mediamatic.net/person-14616-en.html">Andy J. Farnell</a></p> <p>For the first time, Mediamatic organized a Pure Data workshop. It was a big success! <br/> We invited <a href="http://www.mediamatic.net/person-13823-en.html">Andy J. Farnell</a>, an experienced sound designer from the U.K to give a workshop about PD and how to use this with audio related matter. You can read his report below.</p> <h2>Day One</h2> <p>One of the most amazing things of PureData is that it is so accessible. Even people with no programming experience whatsoever, can build from scratch (very) basic patches after one day that make funny sounds when a key is pressed, or the mouse is moved. <br/> On the first day we looked at Pd types and components, floats, symbols and lists, and objects, numbers, sliders and so on. <br/> Starting with basic arithmetic we investigated making adders, counters and playing with a little trigonometry with sin and cos functions.<br/> We talked about the process of a Pure Data patch, how messages and numbers flow down the worksheet through objects and how to make them do so in the correct order by understanding evaluation order and triggers.</p> <h2><em>Exercise 1</em></h2> <p>The Beetle Race problem is to create a pair of counters that randomly advance to simulate a race. A solution is shown below that demonstrates the need for and use of triggers nicely. On the left at the top is a receive unit that picks up and displays a symbolic message after &quot;casting&quot; it to make sure it is a symbol. That display is used to show the winner of the race. <br/> When the GO button is pressed, a bang message passes to the trigger which sends the bang on to two further destinations in right-to-left order. The first of these is to a [0( message box. Banging this sends zero to both of the float objects used in the counters, resetting them back to zero. The other sends one to the metronome which takes over generating events. Each metronome tick causes both the counters to increment by a random amount between zero and three. <br/> To decide when one of the beetles has won the value of its slider is compared to 126, one less than the maximum value. If it's greater than 126 we assume it's the winner and stop the game. Then we send out the message to display. </p> <p><span class="inline-image-wrapper ui_animateFigureCaption"><a href="http://www.mediamatic.net/222201/en/pop-up"> <img src="http://fast.mediamatic.nl/f/sjnh/image/297/14608-311-400.gif" height="400" width="311" alt="" title="Beetle Race" playable="1"/> </a><span class="caption-inline"><span class="title"><a title="Vergroot afbeelding - Beetle Race - Mediamatic.net" href="/14608/en/beetle-race">Beetle Race</a></span></span></span></p> <p>We briefly discussed whether the game is fair, and the problem of determinacy and logic in computer games and simulations. <br/> Notes: The game is not fair because one player must always move first and there are a bagful of philosophical implications that can lead us into considering the nature of computationally generated random numbers, multi-processing and concurrency and all sorts of other things. Many of the group grasped this intuitively and made interesting suggestions to improve the game.<br/> In the afternoon we talked more about lists, GUI components, input and output using keys, joysticks and other basic HID controllers. </p> <h2><em>Exercise 2</em></h2> <p>To make a ball spin around but gradually slow down we needed to understand how to manipulate and divide time. <br/> By using a counter to keep track of how long the ball has been spinning we can change the rate of the metronome. <br/> When the speed of the ball drops below a certain point we want to stop the game. This happens when the metronome period is greater than a threshold, 200 in the solution shown. Two solutions are given in the Pure Data files here. One is a more elegant version that uses the properties of the latest version of sending, which can re-route its destination dynamically. Essential units like delays, filters, signal generators and tables came into play, so by lunchtime most of the group knew how to build basic synthetic sounds and how to load, save and process existing audio data.<br/> The first practical was to create a random melody generator as a musical toy. This refreshed the previous days work in the message domain as we explored how to control the pitch and amplitude of a single sine wave. Our collective solution that we worked out on the main screen is here.</p> <p>We had a little time to briefly look at HID, MIDI and other I/O devices. Here's an example of using <a href="http://www.obiwannabe.co.uk/html/workshops/mediamatic/patches/keyplay.pd">computer keys</a> to play notes, and a <a href="http://www.obiwannabe.co.uk/html/workshops/mediamatic/patches/theremin.pd">&quot;Theremin&quot;</a> using a joystick to control amp and frequency.</p> <p>After Lunch I spent a couple of hours on the principles of synthetic sound design. If the day had been longer, or less beer had been consumed the previous night, we would have moved on to games sound design proper, but the group felt an itch to get hands on playing with some musical uses of Pd, so we decided to move on to the final group project. This practical was to construct a drum machine capable of playing some rhythms using a bass, snare and hi-hat instrument. </p> <h2><em>Exercise 3</em></h2> <p>First we discussed the nature of each instrument, the frequencies and timbres involved and how we might add dynamics to shape our signals. The snare is an interaction between a tight skin, a coil that contacts the skin, and a beater/stick that hits out the rhythm. <br/> The sound is a composition of some pitched and some noisy waveforms, so we looked at how to use noise~ and osc~ units to build up a layered sound. <br/> The bass is a low pitched, more heavily damped skin, whose pitch is a function of the pressure of the beater on it. We considered FM and how we might move the frequency of an oscillator to best emulate the effect we wanted. Finally, a hi-hat is a pair of small cymbals that clash together and it has many high and complex frequencies. <br/> To get the sound of a hi-hat we thought again about what oscillators and noise sources could do together if we mixed and modulated them in different ways, and how those methods corresponded to physical attributes and actions.</p> <p>It was very interesting that every students/groups solution was unique. Music DSP is such a fun subject to explore because everyone comes up with a different twist that reflects some level of understanding. After making a sock for ourselves, we met other socks and spoke sock-talk with them. It was everyone's guess what could come of it, sock love is one of the best kinds.</p> <p>During <a href="http://www.mediamatic.net/girlfriend"><em>The Girlfriend Experience</em></a> we offered flash workshops like <em>Make your own Sock Puppet</em>. </p> <p>During the workshop, you were able to select the parts to make your sock puppet the character you always wanted to be. We had white socks, pinks socks, chocolate socks and more socks as well as a wide variety of string and yarn to emulate your hair. In collaboration with Radio Rietveld.</p> <h2>What and why?</h2> <p>With the developments in streaming online audio, podcasting, microtransmitters, multi-user VoIP chatrooms, (etcetera) our idea of what radio is has thoroughly expanded. <br/> Participants of this workshop design radio experiences for (interactive?) listeners. Workshop projects consist of homegrown content ideas for a specific combination of various older and newer 'radio' practices.
