Gene Sharp has enabled citizens of dictatorships across the world to overthrow their governments. Documentary maker Ruaridh Arrow showed significant fragments of the film he made about this influential man, as well as raw material from the shooting.

<h3>From Dictatorship to Democracy</h3> Since its publication in 1993, From Dictatorship to Democracy has been translated into more than thirty different languages. The guide to nonviolent revolution has enabled and inspired citizens from all over the world to overthrow their dictatorial governments. In 2000 the Otpor used the guide to overthrow Milosevic, and during the recent revolution in Egypt photocopies of the Arabic translation were spread amongst the protesters on Tahrir Square. More than half of Gene Sharp's 198 nonviolent weapons were employed. In Russia the book has been burned, and in Iran and Venezuela Gene Sharp, 83 years old, has been proclaimed a national threat. Where are mobile games at at the moment, and where are they heading? 13 game developers, journalists, artists and programmers presented their work, and their plans for the future. From platform games to interactive non-smartphone applications in the urban environment, and from RFID and GPS to HTML5.

<h3>Ignite</h3> Ignite is run by locals, for locals. Founded in Seattle, the events are held around the world. Ignite is fast-paced and merciless, but most of all they're fun, thought-provoking nights, full of fresh ideas and clever insights. Speakers get five minutes to present their idea. They make use of twenty slides that auto-advance every fifteen seconds. A ruthless moderator will guarantee those five minutes aren't exceeded. Ignite serves as a platform for locals to connect offline and have a drink together. <h3>Speakers</h3> <h5>Leonieke Verhoog and Willempje Vrins</h5> Figurerunning is about being a creative, active explorer, and allows you to draw figures in your city. Games are an easy way of addressing complex issues and igniting people to get involved. How can mobile games contribute to a better future? What good can a mobile game do? Louise Downe (UK) of Tate Modern, Karel Millenaar of FourceLabs and Emer Beamer of Butterfly Works will be joining us to discuss these questions. The evening will be hosted by Michiel de Lange.

<h4>Speakers</h4> Karel Millenaar of <a href="http://www.fourcelabs.com/index.html">FourceLabs</a>, a game development company, will kick off this evening. FourceLabs is specialized in pervasive games, and Karel is their gameplay expert. He will give us his view on how to stimulate the gamer's fantasy, and how play elements can be designed without being too high tech. Louise Downe will be joining us from London. Louise works for Tate Modern, where they developed <a href="http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/information/tatetrumps.shtm">Tate Trumps,</a> a digital card game. After arcade machines, consoles, handhelds and installations, we've finally reached the virtual Level 5: Mobile Games. The three-day Mob Fest marks the end of the Arcade exhibition. An Ignite evening consisting of 15 speedy 5-minute talks, and two days of in-depth discussion about and demonstrations of mobile games. Buy a ticket and join us.

<h3>Background</h3> In the last decades we've seen gaming move from huge dedicated cabinets in the physical space of the arcade, to the comfort of our homes, and finally into the mobility of our pockets. Mobile devices have become platforms for mobile and pervasive gaming. Games have broken free from the virtual screenspace and have become embedded in our everyday environments. ‘Mobile gaming’ thus refers to the platforms on which games are played, and the integration of games into the physical environment. Connected to our friends online and our urban surroundings, we play our way through life. Or so they say. Mobile games represent new ways of playing as well as new ways of using play. But what makes a good mobile game? How can you move beyond collecting points for meaningless whatnot's, and create something that sticks? And how can mobile games contribute to doing good? Are they our next best hope for a better world, like alternate reality game designer Jane McGonigal argues? And what does the future of mobile gaming have in store for us? During Mob Fest we will approach mobile gaming from different cultural, technical and societal angles. <h3>Day 1</h3> During Thinking Mobile we will explore possible directions for mobile gaming that can take this genre beyond the level of ‘play once and never use again’. How can we create durable mobile games; how to create performances, immersion, pictures of the way we live? And what is the role of local culture in developing mobile games? We'll be speaking with Kars Alfrink, Richard Birkin and Duncan Speakman. Michiel de Lange will be hosting the evening. <h4>Speakers</h4> Kars Alfrink is the founder and designer of <a href="http://whatsthehubbub.nl/">Hubbub</a>, a design studio specialized in physical, social games. Kars moves between the lines of interaction- and game design. He seeks ways of integrating people and their surroundings through games. In doing so, he hopes to encourage them to think about the social relevance of their environment and how to make use of it. Good citizenship and cultural participation are keywords while thinking about new applied urban games. For Mob Fest he will provide us with his insightful opinion on what makes a good mobile game. Het zijn vliegensvlugge, provocerende avonden vol radicale en minder radicale ideeën, ferme vragen en een streng tikkende klok. Sprekers krijgen vijf minuten de tijd een idee, project, of zichzelf te presenteren. Zij maken gebruik van twintig slides die elkaar na vijftien seconden automatisch opvolgen. Ignite dient als een platform waarop locals offline bijeen kunnen komen. <h3>Programma</h3> Deze sprekers bieden inzicht in de beste, meest veelbelovende, grappige, scherpe en ingenieuze projecten en ideeën omtrent het centrale thema van sensoren. Verwacht programmeurs, interactie ontwerpers, hardware helden, kunstenaars en wetenschappers. <h5>Gordan Savicic</h5> DS brut is een open source hardware prototyping platform voor de Nintendo DS. Met behulp van DS brut kunnen game consoles makkelijk worden aangesloten op verschillende sensoren. Gordan, een van de ontwerpers, vertelt ons meer. <h5>Wilbert Baan</h5> Wilbert is een creatieve technologist bij SOMEHOW branded utilities. Tot voor kort werkte hij voor de Volkskrant. Dirk vertelt ons meer over dit stukje software. <h5>Supriyo Chatterjea</h5> Supriyo werkt samen met het Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS). Hij onderzoekt het gebruik van een uitgebreid sensor netwerk gesitueerd voor het Great Barrier Reef. Vanavond legt hij uit wat daarbij komt kijken. <h5>Helden</h5> Bas en Thomas gebruiken sensoren om het publiek te betrekken bij hun interactieve installaties. Haar werk betreft digitale fabricatie en technologie voor de mens. <h5>Travis Goodspeed</h5> Travis is een hacker en houdt van gespen. <h5>Rnul Interactive</h5> Rnul Interactive zijn Aart Muis en Rob Donkers. In hun interactieve installaties combineren ze geluid, beeld en bewaring. Ze analyseren het gedrag van bezoekers en gebruiken deze data om op het publiek te reageren. Vanavond laat zij een aantal van haar werken zien, namelijk Body as Interface en haar nieuwste werken: As an artist, I need to rest en Sensitive to Pleasure. Sensitive to Pleasure is een interactief werk waarin het gedrag van het publiek een sterke fysieke reactie teweegbrengt bij het lichaam van de kunstenares. <h5>Vesna Manojlovic</h5> Vesna ontwikkelt en geeft gevorderde cursussen in RPSL, Routing Registry, DNSSEC en IPv6 bij RIPE. Ignite Amsterdam 2 took place during Museum Night. Speakers, musicians and writers were joined and bound by one simple rule: twenty slides, five minutes.

<h3>Ignite</h3> Ignite is run by locals, for locals. Founded in Seattle, the events are held around the world. Ignite is fast-paced and merciless, but most of all they're fun, thought-provoking nights, full of fresh ideas and clever insights. Speakers get five minutes to present their idea. They make use of twenty slides that auto-advance every fifteen seconds. A ruthless moderator will guarantee those five minutes aren't exceeded. Musicians, artists, designers and writers took turns wooing the audience in just five minutes. Each presentation was held twice. Indie heroes Space Siren and the freshly nostalgic electro pop outfit Staatseinde played some nice tunes. <h5>Mark Shepard</h5> Mark conducts research into the implications of ubiquitous computing for urban environments.
