<p>Come play on our farm: a little patch of mushroom paradise in the center of Amsterdam. Learn how to grow and prepare your own mushrooms, and join us on fungi scavenger hunts. Explore the world of mushrooms through art works and lectures. Imagine what it would mean to be able to replace plastic with a biodegradable fungi-based alternative.</p>

<h3><a href="http://www.mediamatic.net/page/232497/en">Art</a></h3> <p>Mushrooms remain a source of inspiration for every generation of artists. View the world of fungi through the eyes of contemporary artists who are working with fungi in its many forms. From a giant moldy tomato wall to magnified images of fungal cultures, we are exploring and experimenting with this new and complex world. Mycelium (the roots of fungi) can be used to literally grow a biodegradable material that can replace Styrofoam and other plastics. What does this mean? How can we use fungi to radically change eco-unfriendly production processes? Can we kill plastic? Paddestoelen Paradijs is a first, playful step towards a larger design initiative that will stimulate the cultural and artistic potential of innovative design solutions and sustainable materials. That means it has very, very few particles, like dust, in the air. Substrate for the cultivation of mushrooms is made in such a room. We built this clean room ourselves so that we can experiment with growing our own mushrooms. <p>Kom kijken in onze kwekerij: een klein paddestoelen paradijs in hartje Amsterdam. Leer hoe je paddestoelen kweekt en klaarmaakt, en sluit je aan bij de schimmel zoektochten. Ervaar de psychedelische wereld van paddestoelen door middel van kunst en lezingen. Stel je voor wat het betekent als plastic vervangen kan worden door een afbreekbare schimmel.</p>

Mycelium (de wortels van paddestoelen) kan gebruikt worden om een afbreekbaar materiaal te groeien dat piepschuim kan vervangen. Wat betekent dit? Hoe kunnen we schimmels gebruiken om eco-onvriendelijke productieprocessen radicaal te veranderen? Kunnen we plastic voorgoed gedag zeggen? Paddestoelen Paradijs is een eerste stap richting een groter design initiatief. Het stimuleren van culturele en artistieke potentie van innovatieve ontwerpoplossingen en afbreekbare materialen staat voorop. Dit betekent dat er heel weinig deeltjes, zoals stof, in de lucht zitten. Substraat voor het kweken van paddestoelen wordt in zo'n ruimte gemaakt. Zaagsel en een biologische toevoeging worden in een mixer gedaan. Langzaam voeg je water toe tot het mengsel de juiste vochtigheidsgraad heeft. Dan steriliseer je het mengsel om alle schadelijke organismen te doden. Nadat je het hebt gesteriliseerd is de temperatuur verlaagd en kan het mengsel in de zakken worden gedaan. Nu kunnen de paddestoelen beginnen met groeien. </p> <p>Ervaar hoe het is om in een clean room te werken. <p>The harnessing of the immense power of the atom is one of the great achievements of the 20th century, one that both poses great risks and offers great opportunities. Under the Beach, a Radiant City, an installation by Finnish architect Martti Kalliala, explores a future scenario where the risks of spent nuclear fuel are turned into an opportunity for leisure. Inspired by the afterglow of nuclear waste, Kalliala created an artificially hot beach in Mediamatic FABRIEK, the new gigantic exhibition space of Mediamatic. For ten days of winter you can immerse yourself in the radiance of the thunderbolts of Zeus.</p>

<p>Martti Kalliala (1980) is a Finnish architect based in Helsinki. Currently he is on a tour with a book titled <em>Solution 239-246 Finland: The Welfare Game</em>, he wrote together with Jena Sutela and Tuomas Toivonen. The book proposes a number of cultural, economical and social pragmatic utopian projects for Finland. These projects range from the complete absurd to feasible and serious. One of the projects is based on the fact that Finland wants to build underground nuclear waste disposal plants. In theory these plants will produce an enormous amount of warmth, what if we use this warmth to warm ourselves? Would it be an idea if we use this nuclear warmth, the way health spa's and thermal baths use thermal springs?</p> <p>Martti Kalliala is currently living and working in Helsinki. He founded research and design practice <a href="http://pro-toto.eu/">Pro Toto</a>. Kalliala also constitutes one half of the electronic music duos Renaissance Man and Heat Death.</p> <h3>Radiant Picnic</h3> <p>On Sunday, the 4th of March people are welcome to join the Radiant Picnic. <p>Het gebruik van atoomkracht heeft de 20e eeuw zowel grote risico's als grote verworvenheden gebracht. De Finse architect Martti Kalliala onderzoekt in zijn werk hoe je nucleair afval kunt gebruiken voor recreatieve doeleinden. Gefascineerd door de warme nagloed van kernafval heeft Kalliala een kunstmatig strand gecreëerd midden in de grote tentoonstellingshal van Mediamatic. Tien dagen lang zal de installatie Under the Beach, a Radiant City te zien zijn en de stralende bliksem van Zeus je tot op het bot verwarmen.</p>

José might have found a solution: window agriculture. An alternative way of practicing urban agriculture when there are no gardens or balconies around. </p> <h5>Yann Seznec</h5> <p>Yann worked with mycologist Patrick Hickey to create a musical installation. Using custom built software and hardware, they made a system that reacted in real time to spores falling from mushrooms. <p>In this workshop you will learn how you can make your own straw-based substrate. We're going to infect this straw with oyster mushroom spawn. After this workshop you have enough knowledge to repeat this procedure at home. Of course you will take your freshly made oyster mushroom substrate bag home after the workshop.</p>

<h3>What?</h3> <p>30 years ago the white button mushroom was the only mushroom you could find in the supermarket. A lot of things have changed in the meantime, but most people still only eat the white button mushrooms. Getting people to grow and consume all the varieties of mushrooms has been a slow process. This workshop is innovative and exciting because growing your own mushrooms is a new form of agricultural technology. </p> <p>We start with sterilising the straw. By cooking the straw in a pressure cooker you instantly get rid off the existing mold and fungus spores that are often naturally present in the straw. We cook the straw for half an hour and then we let it cool down till it's approximately 25 degrees celsius. Then we start with the grafting process by mixing in the spores with our hand. After that we grab a big filter bag, put the mixture in and seal the bag. When you come home, make sure to put the bag in a dark and warm place (28 degrees celsius) and wait a couple of weeks until the straw is fully colonised by the mycelium. Since we are always trying to make connections between the online- and offline world, we found yet another nice way to connect the digital with the analogue. Try the QR Codes with the scanner on your mobile phone, and see for yourself that they really work.</p>

<h3>What?</h3> <p>QR Code — abbreviated from Quick Response Code — is the trademark for a type of matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code) first designed for the automotive industry. More recently, the system has become popular outside of the industry due to its fast readability and large storage capacity compared to standard UPC barcodes. Ministeck was invented by Helmut Gottwald in 1965. In the late 1990s it became an independent firm in Germany. If you read German, check out the German <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ministeck">wikipedia page about Ministeck</a>.</p> <h3>How?</h3> <p>In this workshop you will make digital readable codes with the campy analogue material mini-steck. It's easy and fun! We start with a short introduction about QR-codes. Why were they made, how do they work and what is the future of these new tracking and informative codes? He'll be assisted by members of Johan Pelgrim and members of <a href="http://www.dutchaug.org/events/51448682/?eventId=51448682&action=detail">The Dutch Android User Group</a>.</p> <h3>What?</h3> <p>When thinking about building a game for Android, one can write it from scratch. Or you can look for tools, libraries and engines that already exist so you don't have to reinvent the wheel. We did that at The Pill Tree for both Chalk Ball and Space Cat, both games have different requirements and the solutions we found were also different. In this session we will summarize the strong and weak points of AndEngine and jPCT-AE and the uses you can make of them. We will also give a brief explanation of other libraries that are interesting, such as ScoreLoop / OpenFeint for scores and awards and give a short introduction to virtual currency and incentivated ads. Er groeit een generatie op die een compleet nieuw mediagedrag vertoont en zich geen wereld zonder social media kan voorstellen. In dit kader moet de marketing zich zien aan te passen, deze generatie bereik je niet met middelen en methoden uit het verleden.</p>

<p>Veel organisaties gaan met social media aan de gang zonder achterliggende, doordachte strategie. Discussies over of de organisatie nou wel of niet actief moet worden op Twitter en of een Facebookpagina wel of juist geen goed idee is, zijn niet relevant en al helemaal niet strategisch. Het is veel beter om na te denken over een strategische inzet van online communicatie om je organisatiedoelen te bereiken. Daarnaast is het meestal nodig per onderwerp een andere koers te varen; per doelgroep kan een totaal verschillende aanpak nodig zijn.</p> <p>Tijdens deze training is er daarom veel aandacht voor strategische communicatieplanning.
