Crypto-nationalism
2006
The "Crypto-Nationalism" show featured work made during or resulting from my stay in Lithuania, circling around the themes of history and identity.
The title of the show is taken from Anatol Lievens excellent book on the Baltic States, ‘The Baltic Revolution’. While the term Crypto-Nationalism is occasianally used by historians and journalists, none of them were able to provide me with a definition or proper description of it's meaning. Yet it is a very charged word, and it makes many associations pop up.
It seemed a fitting name for a show featuring work that dealt with the ghost-like feeling of history, and (national) identity.
Crypto-Nationalism showed two videos and two static works. The videos were "Cookshow," a programme made with the cooks of a boarding school, and "Past Perfect," a documentary-style video detailing the reconstruction of the Royal Palace in Vilnius and the current popularity of paganism in Lithuania.
Static works on display were the Maps-project and Confused Timeline, a timeline that starts out with clear data and events but gradually digresses into ambiguous statements concerning the philosophy and evolution of history.
