De Amsterdam Biennale 2009 presenteerde de kunst scene van over de hele wereld. Meer dan dertig internationale curatoren uit het netwerk van Mediamatic gaven hun kijk op de hedendaagse kunst van hun stad.

De Biennale was een tentoonstelling die iedere week groeide. Op 16 oktober 2009 openden de eerste paviljoens en op 12 december vierden we dat de biennale af was. Er waren tot 3 januari 37 paviljoens te bezichtigen: Kaboel, Napels, Amsterdam 1, Melbourne, Belgrado, Damascus, München, Boston, Cairo, Tallinn, Amsterdam 2, Lima 1, Lima 2, Stuttgart, Beirut, Kobe, Portland, Istanbul, Casablanca, Seoul, Bogota, Tokio, Leeds, Toronto, St. Petersburg, Tehran, Rio de Janeiro, Amsterdam 3, Bamako, Taipei, Brooklyn 1, Brooklyn 2, Rome, Copenhagen, Milaan, Porto Alegre en Nicosia.

Mediamatic Travel

De Amsterdam Biennale is onderdeel van Mediamatic Travel. Het project bestaat uit de Amsterdam Biennale 2009, een open netwerk van lokale experts in meer dan 50 landen, de website www.travel.mediamatic.net en de reiscatalogus Bestemmingen 2010.

Het Mediamatic Travel project richt zich in eerste instantie vooral op plaatsen bekend vanwege oorlog, piramiden, honger of kaas. We laten zien dat ook in Damascus, Detroit of Dakar vitale hedendaagse kunst is en bieden ingangen om kennis te maken.

Travel website en catalogus

Overal bestaat hedendaagse kunst en zijn er makers die dit met je willen delen. Mediamatic Travel is een groeiend netwerk van creatieven in meer dan 50 steden rond de wereld. Van Lima tot Nairobi en van Kiev tot Kabul brengen lokale experts reizigers in contact met de plaatselijke galerieën, studio's en festivals, mode shows, de muziek scene of de meest interessante hedendaagse kunstenaars en kunstprojecten. Geen kant en klare reizen naar afgezaagde bestemmingen maar doe-het-zelf reizen om onbekende plekken te verkennen.

In de reiscatalogus Bestemmingen 2010 (56 p. full colour) stellen ruim 20 lokale experts het project voor. In oktober worden 40.000 exemplaren van de catalogus door heel Nederland verspreid. Op de Travel website kunnen reizigers direct contact maken met deze lokale gidsen, en vinden zij informatie over nog veel meer bestemmingen en tips. De website is bedoeld als een open netwerk waar steeds meer lokale experts en reizigers aan kunnen meedoen. De website werd op 16 oktober gelanceerd.
