Form follows organism

Biotalk 12 - with Naja Ryde Ankarfeldt, Emma van der Leest

17 Sep 2015

What are the social, cultural en technological implications of new bio-based materials? And what possibilities do they offer for artists, designers, engineers, architects, scientists, farmers and chefs? Find out at Biotalk, a monthly lecture series with leading figures in the field of Bio Art, Science and Design. Talks start at 20:30 in the Black Barn

Microbial Skin by Naja Ryde Ankarfeldt - This is my microbial skin grower. Inside it lives a micro organism, when you feed it, it creates a microbial cellulose structure. The project is a part of "living art - live art", a collaboration between artscience students and Wetlab Waag Society, Amsterdam 2014.

Emma van der Leest

'Form follows organism: the biological computer' is a project by Emma van der Leest and a continuation of her fascination of biodesign and the shifting role of the (product) designer. By discovering materials and processes, that nature has designed but has not patented, we can search for new grown materials that are completely compostable and minimize the usage of hazardous resources that can cause huge damage to our ecosystem. Emma co-created with a yellow intelligent slime mould, to find out if she can use an organism to create smart patterns and designs, based on the biological algorithm.

Naja Ryde Ankarfeldt

Working between art and science Naja Ryde Ankarfeldt creates aesthetic tactile experiences. The installation 'Tale of the non-human' gives the audience the opportunity to touch and examine an exhibited living microorganism grown from bacteria and yeast. This is a strong polymer material with a funny consistency and a potential alternative to plastic. The 'microbial skin grower' is designed as a machine holding a living organism, creating a
microbial cellulose structure that is very similar to our own skin.

Los van de verhalen van de sprekers kunnen vaak hun producten ook ervaren worden. Margherita Soldati
