Ignite Amsterdam 14

12 presentations x 5 minutes

25 Jan 2012

With our eye on the Global Game Jam happening at the end of the month, we invited a few young, experimental game designers to share their latest projects. Furthermore, we're diving into (Dutch) design and, of course, fungi. Drop by for your monthly dose of bite-sized enlightenment. Please RSVP on this page.

Ignite

Ignite is run by locals, for locals. Fast-paced and merciless, Ignite evenings are fun, thought-provoking nights, full of fresh ideas and clever insights. Speakers get five minutes to present their idea. They make use of twenty slides that auto-advance every fifteen seconds. Ignite serves as a platform for locals to connect offline and have a drink together. All presentations will be given in English.

Roel Roscam Abbing / Micha Prinsen

A few months ago two designers uploaded parts of a rifle to Thingiverse, a site founded by Makerbot to share 3D projects. Bypassing their no-weapons policy, one of the parts they uploaded is the only part you need to have a license to buy (in the US). Enticed by the questions this raised, Roel and Micha started their own research into the limits of open source. What about open source drugs?

Rami Ismail and Laurens de Gier

Rami and Laurens will present Glitchhiker, winner of the 2011 Global Game Jam Nederland (jury + audience award). In Glitchhiker the player wasn't the only one who had lives: the game did too. Every time a player died, the game lost a life. The more lost lives (the game started off with 100), the more distorted the game became, until it finally died. It cannot be played anymore. But it's still nice to look at.

Before Anne started working for the CBS (Fungal Biodiversity Centre), she did research into the Podospora anserina, a fungus that ages. She found that there are certain conditions that can be altered so that the fungus' lifespan can be stretched from 3 weeks to 3 years. With one disadvantaged: it can no longer reproduce.
