Secretopia: Femininity and Life

The Moon Inside You movie discussion

27 Mar 2017

The documentary, The Moon Inside of you [2009], describes the director's personal journey in which she explores how we, both women and men, experience menstruation. Diana Fabianova's initial innocent curiosity sparks off a voyage to the very roots of femininity and life. The Moon Inside You is a fresh look at a taboo that defines the political and social reality of both women and men in a more profound way than society might be willing to admit.

The Moon Inside you [2009] Still - The documentary is directed by Diana Fabianova

The most wide-ranging theories put forward by anthropologists, psychologists, journalists, gynecologists, and belly-dance teachers are intercut with old-fashioned information films and animated clips on menstruation. The connecting factor throughout the film is 11-year-old Dominika, who keeps the audience updated about her impending menstruation, bringing up all kinds of questions. Why is blue liquid used in advertisements for menstruation pads? Is the pill being used to adjust our body's rhythm to that of a male-dominated society? Why do we bleed when, in nature, blood is synonymous with death? Diana's quest brings her a deeper understanding and appreciation of her body. And also of her moods, because as one expert claims, whereas women are sometimes perceived to be complaining during menstruation, it is actually the hormones giving them the courage to finally say what they really always thought. Facing the menstrual etiquette with doses of humour and self irony, the documentary approaches the subject through both personal and collective references, thus challenging our preconceived idea of womanhood.

Secretopia is Mediamatic's programme series that focusses on secretions, the stuff that comes out of your body.
