Workshop: Composing Fragrance in the Distillation process

Introduction to the art of scent distillery

17 Mar 2019

Distillation is an old and complicated process of extracting essential oils from plant based materials. The search for extracting the smells from flowers and plants goes on for ages and distillation became a more and more precise way to preserve essences. During this workshop you will be introduced to the history of scent extraction by means of the distillation process, by olfactory artist and perfumer Frank Bloem.

Distilling the scent of flowers in the Aroma Lab -

What you will do

In this workshop you will be introduced to the process of distilling. With the plants that grow on the Mediamatic grounds and the waste from the kitchen of Mediamatic, or what extra materials the participants bring to the table, we will form scent bouquets that will be distilled to a artistic essential oil. After 3 and a half hours you will take home a tiny bottle of a 10% solution in alcohol of your own created blend.
