workshop:

Nature needs Heroes: Building Aquaponics Systems

with Saro van Cleynenbreugel

26 Oct 2019

Thanks to Timberland, you will able to join this workshop for 12,50. Read more about the Nature needs Heroes campaign here.

Aquaponics is a sustainable food production system that combines the cultivation of vegetables and fish. It is one of the best ways to produce food in the city, because it hardly takes up any space. The fish excrement feeds the plants, and the plants clean the water for the fish. In this way, not a drop is wasted. In this workshop you will learn how to build a miniponics system, a miniature, home-edition of the bigger Aquaponics towers.

Aquaponics?

The 'Aquaponic Gardening Community' describes Aquaponics as "the cultivation of fish and plants together in a constructed, recirculating ecosystem utilizing natural bacterial cycles to convert fish waste to plant nutrients. This is an environmentally, friendly, natural food-growing method that harnesses the best attributes of aquaculture and hydroponics, without the need to discard any water or filtrate or add chemical fertilizer." The Mediamatic Aquaponics team is currently building an urban oasis based on this ecofriendly system.

Program

We start the day with a tour through Biotoop Dijksgracht and the Aquaponics site. During the tour you'll get a thorough introduction to Aquaponics and a crash course in biology. After that, with our trainers' help, we will start to build the Aquaponics farm together. By the end of the day you will know exactly how to build your own system at home, and know everything about the ecosystem. You will also learn the basics of biology, plumbing and carpentry necessary for the Aquaponics system.
