Enzo Mari

Enzo Mari drew inspiration from the idealism of the arts and crafts movement, and his political views as a communist. In 1974, he created his noteworthy manual: Autoprogettazione?, which can be loosely translated as ‘self-design’. With this manual he sought to give people simple quality furniture, and open source the designs. The furniture projects could be constructed at home with basically a hammer and some nails.

The construction technique is elementary, but the user may carry out the projects in different ways, changing some details and shapes while understanding the basic structural component of an object. Autoprogettazione is an activity of research made through practice.

What you will do

We will come together this Saturday afternoon to bring alive the vision and design process of Enzo Mari. Get inspired by the Autoprogettazione approach, use scrap-wood and available tools in our workshop to experiment freely with techniques, and make your own Mari-creation. The resulting furnishings can be taken home- or be donated to Mediamatic.
