She has a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature with concentrations in Women's and Latin American Studies at Swarthmore College in the U.S. After finishing university, she worked at the UN and as an investigator of police misconduct for the City of New York.

She then had a Fulbright Fellowship in Cyprus, studying the labor conditions of Asian domestic workers and submitted a policy report to the Cypriot Government, the European Union, and the UN. After Cyprus, she worked in Montevideo, Uruguay as an English language teacher. Following these experiences, she started her PhD in Anthropology at Yale. During her time at Yale, in addition to her PhD training, she worked as a union organizer in the campaign to gain recognition for the union of graduate students and teachers (GESO). During her fieldwork in Amsterdam, she was a visiting fellow at the Amsterdam School for Social science Research, where she served as the logistical director of the conference, "Cool Passion: The Political Theology of Conviction."
