Groot made his poetic debut with the collection Net als Earlier (1970), under the pseudonym Jacob der Meistersänger. Since then, he has published several collections of poems and prose works.
Groot was also editor of the Dutch literary magazine De Revisor from 1994 until 1999.
In 2012 he was awarded the Dutch literary prize for poets A. Roland Holst-Penning.
