Shaping Micro-Organisms

Biotalk 09 - with Fabai Wu, Moyashimon and Kamiel Rongen

How do microbes move around? What if you shape them, can you trace their behavior? This Biotalk is all about the movement of micro-organisms and visualizing this in both animations and real life camera shots. We will talk microscopic geometric forms with Fabai Wu, the Japanese anime series Moyashimon and the water-reactions videoclips by Kamiel Rongen.

Fabai Wu

Nanotechnology can be used to study the movements of microbes and the fascinating architectures inside them. Fabai Wu shapes bacteria and then studies the pattern formation and genome organisation in these bacteria. He shapes them into triangles, circles, squares and rectangles to explore how molecules oscillate and automatically find directions within these shapes. At Biotalk he will explain the research he does for TU Delft and we'll get a graphical and moving view on the micro-organisms.

Kamiel Rongen

Fascinated by water and all the reactions with other materials Kamiel Rongen started making video's that go with his work as musician. Contrary to what it feels like everything you see is real and created in the space of a fishbowl.

Moyashimon

Moyashimon is short for the Japanese manga series Moyashimon, Tales of Agriculture by Masayuki Ishikawa. It features a first year student at an agricultural university, who has a unique ability to see and communicate with bacteria and other micro-organisms. We will show a short part of the series.
