Erkki Huhtamo

Erkki Huhtamo was born in Helsinki, Finland and received his Masters of Arts with honors from the University of Turku in 1987.

He has worked for more than ten years as a writer, researcher, lecturer and curator in the field of audiovisual media culture. Huhtamo has lectured at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, The Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, The Universities of Turku, Tampere, Oulu, Lapland.and is currently acting professor of media studies at the University of Lapland in Rovaniemi, Finland.

As a writer on audiovisual culture, including history and the relationship between art and technology, Huhtamo has written numerous articles and edited ten books (in Finnish). His work includes the first Finnish book on virtual reality called The Handbook of the Virtual Voyager (1991). Currently Huhtamo is editing an international book entitled Nintendo Killed the Video Star? Video Art in the Era of Electronic Intermedia (EMA, forthcoming).

Huhtamo has participated in curating the Australian International Video Symposium (1994), ISEA (1994), MuuMedia Festival (1990-92), Machine Culture: the Virtual Frontier (1993), Toshio Iwai Retrospective (1994), New Media Topia/New Media Logio (1994), and The Vasulkas (1992).

His latest contribution to Mediamatic is called Armchair Traveller on the Ford of Jordan , about the stereoscope as a means of virtual travelling.
