The Kurdish Cinema School opened in 2004. But it is struggling - they are housed in temporary accomodation in a secondary school.

They don’t have the money to pay the teachers which have to come from abroad to instruct. There is also the issue of taboos: women are not enrolling due to fear of the social estrangement such a career will mean for them. There are no cinemas operating in the region, private screenings are decreasing and many theatre halls are being used for business purposes instead. They do have a dedicated student body making short films which they finance themselves. Their big upcoming project is to premiere these films in a-soon-to-come International Film Festival.
