Treacle was formed in 2003 as a collective of German and British artists who would like to explore experimental structures for performance events, engage in new forms of artistic collaboration, and develop new strategies for audience interaction. We have specialised in site-specific and site-responsive performance, reinventing disused spaces, exposing forgotten places and interrupting public spaces.

We have recently moved away from large site-specific productions, towards experimental cartography, small-scale interventions or participative activities taking place within the public realm, and interactive processes used for collecting and collating documentation.

These lines of enquiry include a series of investigations that explore our relationships to and within an urban environment, documentaries and interactive events that have dealt with notions of solidarity, of the private and public, of nets, holes and boundaries. Each investigation expands, defines or confines space.

Projects have been described as invitations to take part in something, writing into or attempting to read the city, and often incorporate some form of growing archive, in which the documentation of the project is part of the experience.
