Decoding Lebanon

An introduction to Lebanese cultural production and its motives.

Decoding Lebanon is part of Decoding Europe, a program of film screenings, public interviews and expert presentations investigating personal stories and perspectives of cultural producers across Europe and beyond. Through the program and its forthcoming publication Decoding Europe is aiming to open up the rich body of individual narratives and experiences that compose its multifaceted cultural identity.

About the artists:
Ali Cherry is an artist and director from Beirut. He recently finished a period of research at DAS Arts in Amsterdam. He will show his new film Circle around the sun.

Christine Tohme is a curator from Beirut and director and a founding member of the Lebanese Association for Plastic Arts, Ashkal Alwan. In 2001 Ashkal Alwan conceived 'Home Works, a multidisciplinary event intended as a public arena for artists, curators, intellectuals and cultural practitioners to engage in critical reflection and debate.

Nadim Shehadi is an historian and the director of the Centre for Lebanese Studies based in London. The CLS is an independent academic institution aiming to research and contribute towards Lebanon's recovery. It plays a pivotal role as a focus for academics, journalists, business-leaders, policy-makers and students as a major international resource for Lebanon.

Akram Zaatari is a video artist and curator who lives and works in Beirut. He is co-founder of the Arab Image Foundation, through which he developed his recent research-based work on the photographic history of the Middle East.
