THE COLONY

Students and ex-students of the Sandberg Instituut will establish a fictitious colony of artists in Kunsthuis SYB the upcoming weeks.

12 May 2010
15 Jun 2010

Every week, a new group of artists will design the colony. The first group will define the way the colony has come into existence: does the group come into existence in the past, the present or in the future? What kind of ideals and political motives will form the colony? With this information, the second group will portrait the fictitious artists in the colony. What kind of people are they? What do their biographies look like? What is the group’s hierarchy like? What mutual loves, arguments and cooperations are there? A third group will produce artworks for the characters that are made up. Eventually, as a temporary curator, a last group will make an exhibition of all the work made by the former students.

Documentaries, texts, photos, interviews, performances and paintings will be produced on the spot. While working this out, the participants will experience whether it would still be possible for artists’ colonies to work nowadays.

After each week, the group will give the next group and the audience a public lunch presentation in SYB. The developments can also be followed on a weblog of the SYB website.

Lotje van Lieshout and Marieke Coppens, both ex-students of the Sandberg Instituut, organize and supervise the project. The participants are Richtje Reinsma, Pavel van Houten, Mannie Krak, Dorien de Wit , Sachi Miyachi, Jetske Verhoeven, Salomé Lamas, Battal Kurt, Tom Milnes, Gemma Pauwels, Aukje Dekker, Wouter Venema, Marrit Snel, Su Tomesen, Nadine Hottenrott and Wouter Klein Velderman.
