Aquaponics Tour

1 Jul 2015
31 Dec 2016

Aquaponics is a method of sustainable farming in which food can be produced within the city, made possible by the small amount of space the system needs. An ecosystem is essentially created from which plants and fish are cultivated alongside each other. A late water flow is set up from the fish tanks, all through the planters of food, back round to the fish tanks. The fish excrement feeds the plants, and the plants clean the water for the fish. In this way, a minimum amount of waste is produced.

Take a short, guided trip around our sustainable greenhouse and learn more about this form of urban agriculture.

Aquaponics Catfish - Container for the catfish that feed the plants that feed the fish

Aquaponics at Biotoop Dijksgracht

Mediamatic has been cultivating Aquaponics systems since 2012. At our current location, Biotoop Dijksgracht, the greenhouse that houses the Aquaponics is optimally positioned to receive a lot of sunlight and capture the sun's heat. Within the greenhouse are large metal containers where we keep hundreds of African sharp tooth catfish in large fish tanks. African catfish like to be kept warm and dark so the metal container is an ideal home for them.

If you are interested in a tour of our Aquaponics farm you can make an appointment with Saro van Cleynenbreugel or simply enquire at the Mediamatic Eten bar. During the tour we will tell you all about our Aquaponic system. You can even try a mint tea at the Mediamatic Eten bar afterwards - the fresh mint comes straight from the greenhouse!
