De Brakke Grond presents Sonic Soirée: a mini, intimate version of Sonic Connections, the pop & rock festival De Brakke Grond hosts each year in April. Blackie & The Oohoos and Flying Horseman are up-&-coming Belgian talent: now that both bands are releasing debut albums, the moment has arrived to conquer the Netherlands. And no, you are not seeing double (or triple); Loesje Maieu, Martha Maieu and Milan Warmoeskerken all play in both bands. Saelors is based in Amsterdam, and will play a set in the Café during the intermission.

Blackie & The Oohoos - Veerle Desmedt

Flying Horseman - myspace
With Flying Horseman, singer/guitarist Bert Dockx and his five comrades present bluesy, prophetic, black-edged songs. Live, this group is unmissable: intense, dark, surprising, layered, intimate and conspiratorial and wildly rocking by turns. The jury at Humo’s Rock Rally 2010 said: One five-minute song ('There Lives a House'), and not a second of boredom.

Blackie & The Oohoos - myspace
In April 2010, Blackie & The Oohoos were a resounding success at Sonic Connections, with Ragazze Kwartet. Using a wide range of instruments including electric guitar, bass, chimes, ukulele and the musical saw they are undisputed masters of the intimate, fantastic and dark atmosphere. Jan Willem Broek of Caleidoscoop: Rest assured that another new, unique sensation has hit Belgium. This is a record that could just do well in the annual lists.

Saelors - myspace
This duo, made up of Alexandra Duvekot and Thijs Havens, much prefer playing live to the recording studio. According to Alexandra (in an interview with Vice Magazine): We always take a lot of instruments along, and then try out a lot of stuff on stage. 3voor12: The Netherlands has been enriched by something new: pop-noir, freakfolk 2.0 and film music for a Warmendam or Verhoeven.
