Adorning the Internal

Biotalk 22 - with Isaac Monté, Toby Kiers and Mandy den Elzen

27 Oct 2016

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but we are all squishy and messy on the inside, aren't we? In this edition of Biotalk we will listen to two visual artists who challenge that perception. Whether it is appreciating the beauty that is already inside, or the possibility to decorate our innards, get ready to reconsider what our parts should be looking like.

This event is for free! As we are celebrating the opening of the exhibition The Art of Deception earlier this evening

Isaac Monté

In a not too-distant future, there might be actual beauty on our inside. As a social designer observing new possibilities in the medical field, Isaac wonders. He explores the era of synthetic aesthetics by taking a common pig's heart, which most would describe as gross, breaking it down to its 'scaffolding' and transforming it into a piece of art. Could the designer eventually find a place in the medical world this way? The Art of Deception was made in collaboration with Professor Toby Kiers, and commissioned by Bio Art & Design Awards with the support of ZonMw.

This evening is also the opening of The Art of Deception in the Sluisdeurenloods at Mediamatic. Come early to preview the hearts.

Mandy den Elzen

Form follows function, especially in nature, and this is an inexhaustible source of inspiration to Mandy. The material is always the main subject in her work. By using organs of cows, horses and other animals, she makes new materials for us to wonder about. Yes, the stomach of an ostrich can be an object of beauty, and even applied as leather for fashion design. This and more at Biotalk.
