Adorning the Internal

Biotalk: Thursday Oct. 27 20:30

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but aren't we all squishy and messy on the inside? Artists Mandy den Elzen and Isaac Monté use unusual materials like animal intestins, fish eyes and discarded meat to create works that relates to the notion of beauty, preservation and perception. By borrowing techniques from the leather and organ-transplant industry they are able to conserve and show the inner life of living things.

Mandy den Elzen

Artist Mandy van Elzen's recent study lies in the morphology of fishes and the preservation of their organs. Their otoliths for instance accrete layers of calcium carbonate and gelatinous matrix witch varies with the growth of the fish – often less growth in winter and more in summer. By counting the rings, it is possible to determine the age of the fish in years. Mandy will share her research into the intestins of animals and her preservation techniques

Isaac Monté (BE) and Toby Kiers (US)

Humans use deception to achieve perfection in society, art and science. Reacting to this through art, Isaac Monté and Toby Kiers have taken discarded pig hearts and transformed them into elegant vessels for new life. By using a process called decellularization their are able to generate 'ghost organs' that function as a black canvas for designers. This installation: The Art of Deception is currently on show at Mediamatic.
