Subset of telestreet movement

When we talk about Telestreet, we mean a microbroadcasting station, a 'pirate' low-cost broadcasting with low power in a limited radius range.

Inside this panorama lives InsuTV, a telestreet born in Naples, in the South of Italy in Spring 2003, during anglo-american coalition bombing in Iraq. Their first production was “Peace Family” (a trick with the word Peace that is also a surname in Italy) and in February 2004 the first broadcasting. After one year of activity they powered their own transmissions, broadcasting on two channels.

Inaugurated by the launch of Tele Orfeo in Bologna in June 2002, “street television” is a low-cost participatory model of independent community media. Stations utilize a micro-transmitter to broadcast over unused frequencies within ranges of under a kilometer. Operated by and covering issues of interest to local communities, the “telestreet” movement has since become a network of over 200 neighbourhood television micro-channels across Italy. It was launched as an explicit challenge to Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s dominance of the private airwaves and control over the public ones; setting up a telestreet station is open to anyone. As such, the different stations are run by a wide spectrum of groups, including those involved in the struggles of migrants, social centres, trade union organizers, and dozens of neigbourhood groups.
InsuTV’s palimpsest is based on social communication and an entertainment - maybe not in fashion is truly genuine. At this moment, their palimpsest is made of documentaries, movies, cartoons, videos and studio programs. But the TV also lives outside itself because of its complex life, so they also work to organize workshops, public projections, selfmade video products, international cooperation projects (Lebanon-Palestine), free-software development, live videojockey sets. In addition, there is a website, a videoblog, a newsletter and a mailing list to communicate.

Insu^tv project aims to give visibility to social events, to the actions, the political work of groups and individuals, to artistic expressions that won’t find a place in the main-stream, even if they're not in competition with it. They have a viral attitude in many areas: trying to contaminate the mainstream by building an autonome route, opposing a free point of view to deviated and militarist official information flow, a slower and deeper point of view not directed to a big mass of spectators but based on the “lots of people- to- lots of people” communication concept and using the possibilities given by the multimedia (ether, web).
