Although the theatre was looted during the 2003 Invasion of Iraq, efforts were underway to restore the theatre until it formally reopened last Autumn 2009.

It is a 1,000 seat theatre, built during the Iran-Iraq war and which in its heyday hosted sell-out foreign productions of Shakespeare and Chekhov.
