Dr Crispian Neill -

Dr Crispian Neill is a Wellcome Trust Research Fellow at the University of Leeds and the founder member of the Sensory Modernisms Research Group at the University. Dr Neill is currently investigating the representation of odour in medical fiction from the mid nineteenth-century to the present day, reviewing the interconnected relationship between language and smells. His research interests also include the use of odour as a performance medium; in 2016 he organised ‘Odourscope: A Pungent Performance of Luis Buñuel’s L’Age D’Or’, in partnership with the Hyde Park Picture House, Leeds.

His PhD thesis, ‘The Smell of Modernism: Metaphor and the Olfactory, 1900-1945’, is currently under revision for publication as a monograph by Palgrave Macmillan.
