Our Labs

Mediamatic currently houses four different labs. The clean lab, green lab, aroma lab and fermentation lab. All have different purposes but are used on a daily basis and are open for artist experiments, and for our own programme.

The Aroma Lab

Our Aroma Lab houses one of the greatest smell libraries in the Netherlands, and is equipped with different smell apparatus and distillation facilities. Originally designed for Klara Ravat’s residency in 2016/2017, the Aroma Lab was redesigned for Art Olfaction Amsterdam, and now offers a workshop-space, where scent design & experimentation are put into practice. This lab can host a variety of public activities, including workshops, artist meetings and opportunities to conduct your own experiments. 


Workshop Scent of Amsterdam in the Aroma Lab - Olfactory artist and experimental filmmaker Klara Ravat presents the workshop The Scent of Amsterdam: Distilling Odors of an Urban Landscape. Over the course of 5 hours participants collectively explored the neighbourhood of Mediamatic Biotoop, visited aromatic urban spaces and learned how to distill a scented memory of Amsterdam. The Clean Lab

The Clean Lab at Mediamatic is a sterile laboratory workspace that facilitates the growing requirements of designers and artists who want to expand their work into biological fabrication  It is a clean space that makes use of UV lighting, disinfectants, and a ‘sterile air laminar flow hood’, which keeps a constant stream of filtered air flowing through the lab. The clean airflow is vital for microbial work to keep out contaminants. Fungi, yeast, micro-organisms, bacteria, and algae are all living materials that we are able to work with.

Fermentation Lab

Our fermentation lab is a controlled kitchen environment, next to the Clean part of Mediamatic’s Bio Clean Lab. This workspace is dedicated to our fermentation experiments and events. There you can distillate your own liquors, brew your own beer, grow your own Tempeh and build strange objects out of mycelium. It is a fermentation experimentation kitchen, a controlled area designed for biological work that does not require a sterile airflow.

Green Lab

The Green Lab or our Aquaponics Greenhouse is an unique green haven in the city of Amsterdam. The Aquaponic Gardening Community describes aquaponics as "the cultivation of fish and plants together in a constructed, recirculating ecosystem utilizing natural bacterial cycles to convert fish waste to plant nutrients. This is an environmentally, friendly, natural food-growing method that harnesses the best attributes of aquaculture and hydroponics, without the need to discard any water or filtrate or add chemical fertilizer." The Mediamatic Aquaponics team is constantly working on an urban oasis based on this eco-friendly system.

The herbs, fruits and vegetables that we can harvest through this system are used on a daily basis in our Mediamatic Eten restaurant.
