Design your own Shroud

with Margherita Soldati

26 Jan 2020

Have you ever thought about what you would wear at your funeral? This fall, we will breathe life into a Dutch tradition with a series of workshops. The workshop invites participants to actively think about their passing and to design their own burial shroud. Margherita Soldati will host the workshop. In her own work, she manipulates textile and uses different techniques to make tactile patterns.

Using unusual stitching methods to create patterns -

What you will do

First, funeral director and Still Life curator Susanne Duijvestein will introduce you to the tradition of the burial shroud, including its meaning and practicalities. Then, with the help of Margherita Soldati, you will start designing your own death shroud. Margherita Soldati is an expert in manipulating textiles and stimulating the senses. She will teach you to create 3D patterns by traditional stitching and non-conventional materials such as clay or bio-plastic. The idea of this workshop is that you determine the design of your shroud, start creating and bring it back home to continue working on it.

Margherita Soldati

In the past years, Margherita has been researching how stimulating tactility can benefit our lives, especially focusing on people suffering from Alzheimer's and dementia. To show this vision, she researches specific materials and textures which could give the right sensory effect and works them into new objects, structures, and surfaces. She also looks into applying this research to small-scale projects, or even standard architectural elements.

"Her fascination for making works that explore the tactile perception comes from the belief that the body is the house of our memory and identity and that all human senses, including vision, are the extension of the sense of touch."
