The respiratory system is the system in humans that takes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. The nose, sinuses, throat, trachea, and lungs are the major parts of this system. Disorders and diseases of the respiratory system can impact the ability to breathe properly or even target specific parts of the respiratory system. Herbs and plants that impact the respiratory system typically possess antibacterial, antioxidant, antiviral and anti-inflammatory qualities. Certain herbs can also have antihistamine and decongestant effects, while other herbs can soothe irritated airways, repair damaged lungs, and positively affect overall respiratory system health.
