Workshop:

T - Building Aquaponics Systems

with Saro van Cleynenbreugel

Aquaponics is a sustainable food production system that combines the cultivation of vegetables and fish. It is one of the best ways to produce food in the city, because it hardly takes up any space. It is also a water efficient method of produce. As the fish excrement feeds the plants, and the plants clean the water for the fish, not a drop of water is wasted. In this workshop, you will learn how to build a miniponics system, a miniature, home-edition of the bigger Aquaponics towers.

What you will do

The workshop will start with a thorough introduction to Aquaponics, while having a tour of the Dijkspark and the Aquaponics garden. After the introduction, the group will start building an Aquaponics farm together. After the workshop, you will know how to build an aquaponics system at home, how the ecosystem works, some of the basics of biology, some plumbing and a bit of carpentry.

What is aquaponics?

The 'Aquaponic Gardening Community' describes Aquaponics as "the cultivation of fish and plants together in a constructed, recirculating ecosystem utilizing natural bacterial cycles to convert fish waste to plant nutrients. This is an environmentally friendly, natural food-growing method that harnesses the best attributes of aquaculture and hydroponics, without the need to discard any water or filtrate or add chemical fertilizer." The Mediamatic Aquaponics team is currently building an urban oasis based on this eco friendly system, which you can come and visit during our open tours.

Aquaponics - Mediamatic has their own urban agriculture system in the form of an Aquaponics greenhouse at the Biotoop Dijkspark, near Amsterdam Central station. Aquaponics is a way to sustainably produce food in the city, because it hardly takes up any space. Plants and fish are cultivated together. The fish excrete ammonia which gets transformed by bacteria into nitrate. The nitrate serves as fertilizer for the plants. Anisa Xhomaqi
