Workshop:

T - Designing Incense - Guest Series

with Niklaus Mettler and guest Digna Tjon A San

1 Jan 4300

Incense is an ancient form of perfumery and has in many cultures different shapes, purposes and functions. In this series we invite various guests to shine light on cultures of incense smoking as an addition to our regular workshop.

With our first guest Digna Tjon A San you will experience Surinamese incense and learn about its cultural history. Later Niklaus Mettler will delve into many different aroma materials, and you will learn how to develop your own Japanese-style incense from scratch.

What you will do

To kick off the workshop Digna Tjon A San gives an introduction to the Black Surinamese incense burning culture, which includes the role of smoking of leaves at funeral rituals burning and talking with spirits.

The rest of the workshop is generally based on the Japanese incense technique (which includes forms of ‘loose’ incense and sticks and cones) but leaves space for your own personal curiosity and will for experimentation. Niklaus will first present particular forms of incense burning and a range of ingredients used in traditional incense-making. He will also delve into less common and more local materials. You will then get to compose your own aromatic incense recipe.

There will be a range of materials that you can use in the workshop, but we invite participants to bring materials that will help to create their personal blend. This can be gums, woods, flowers, spices, fruit-zest or anything that carries an interesting smell for you. Note: the materials you bring have to be completely dry in order use them in your blend.
